Shrek 2 Archetypes

By: Matthew Prudente

Puss in Boots

Nature Helpers

  • In Shrek 2 Puss in Boots is the nature helper. He is a cat that Shrek meets on his journey and assists on his journey.
  • The writer would use this because in movies you can't have the have the same characters, so what better to add a character than a cat who assists Shrek.

Characteristics and Downsides

In the real world

  • A nature side has to have a lot of trust to help out a random person.
  • Must be brave
  • Is a helpful person
  • Downsides include:
  • The hero barely knows this person so they could betray them
  • Could be working with the bad guy
  • Maximus - Tangled
  • Becky - Finding Dory
  • Crush - Finding Nemo

Examples

In Shrek 2

Loyal Retainer/Sidekick

  • The loyal retainer/sidekick in Shrek 2 is Donkey. Donkey is always there right next to Shrek throughout the entire journey helping him.

  • The writers would use this archetype because during every journey the hero has a sidekick who helps the hero. These archetype fit in perfectly with the Hero's Journey.

Loyal Retainer/Sidekick

In the real world

  • A loyal retainer is someone who is heroic and will do anything to protect their hero.
  • A sidekick will follow and support the hero throughout the journey, so the sidekick has to be adventurous.

Shadow Side of the loyal retainer/sidekick

  • Everyone has their downsides and the loyal retainer/sidekick has theirs
  • May betray you when the journey gets tough
  • You just meet them so they may lead into a trap
  • Robin - Batman
  • Chewbacca - Star Wars
  • Pascal - Tangled

Examples

King Harold

The Shape Shifter

  • In every movie there is that one character that you can't tell who side they are on and in Shrek 2 the shape shifter is King Harold
  • Writers include these type of characters because they add drama and and suspense. These characters also confuse the audience which draws their attention.

Good Side and Bad Side

In the real world

  • These characters are mysterious, mischievous, and come filled with drama.
  • The bad side is that can't be trusted, can end up hurting the hero, and can even betray everyone in the end
  • Professor Snape - Harry Potter
  • Gollum - Lord of the Rings

Examples

In Shrek 2

Fairy Godmother

  • In Shrek 2 the Fairy Godmother follows the fairy godmother archetype. She helps the people in need and tries to give them happiness.
  • The writers included this archetype because no one would of expected here to turn out to be a villain so it adds suspense.

Characteristics and Shadows

In the real world

  • A fairy godmother is the following:
  • Caring
  • Helpful
  • Mother like
  • The shadows of this archetype include:
  • She can use her power for evil
  • Fairy Godmother - Cinderella
  • Flora, Fauna, Merryweather - Sleeping Beauty

Examples

Prince Charming and Fairy Godmother

Villain

  • In Shrek 2 there are two villains and they are Prince Charming and Fairy Godmother. They both try to hurt Shrek and Fiona.
  • Writers include this archetype because every hero has their villain they need to face and without a villain there wouldn't be any battle the hero needs to go through

Characteristics and Shadows

In the real world

  • A villain is obviously evil, mischievous, and mysterious, but they are also hurt. Most villains attack because they are hurt and want what the hero has to be happy.
  • The bad side of villains include that they will hurt anyone and anything, won't stop until they are defeated or get what they want, and can't be trusted at all.
  • Joker - Batman
  • Voldemort - Harry Potter
  • Darth Vader - Star Wars
  • Darth Maul - Star Wars
