Don't ask Don't tell repeal act

2010

Background

During World War II, the U.S. Army established a policy that discharged homosexuals regardless of their behavior. In 1981, the Defense Department prohibited gay and lesbian military members from serving.

Background

November 1993, the Defense Authorization Act put “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” into effect, allowing gay and lesbian citizens to serve in the military as long as they did not make their sexual orientation public.

On December 18, 2010, the Senate overturned the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy by a 65-31 vote, which President Barack Obama signed a few days later. The repeal allows gay and lesbian military members to serve openly in the armed forces.

The big Issue

The big issue

The heterossexual society can show their sexuality and serve the army with no charges or fear, the repeal creates an equality between homo and heterosexual, where both of them can serve the army and be open about their sexuality without being charged.

Pro

Two sides

People couldn't be their true selves they had to hide who they were and give up their dreams. The people against the act where the ones that identify as homosexual and wanted to serve the military

Against

Against

Presence of LGBTQ+ individuals in any branch of the military would undermine the ability of people to carry out their duties.Defense Department prohibited gay and lesbian military members from serving in its ranks with a policy that stated, “Homosexuality is incompatible with military service.”

I'm comming out

Song

I've got to show the world

All that I want to be

And all my abilities

There's so much more to me

Somehow, I'll have to make them

Just understand

I got it well in hand

And, oh, how I've planned

I'm spreadin' love

There is no need to fear

And I just feel so good

Every time I hear

This part of the song descvribe pretty much what the repeal is there for. People don't wanted to be judge by their sexuality, they have so much to show, abilities and values that were not based on their sexual orientation. They also wanted to make the world understand that they are like anyone else, they just want to spread love and not be judged. They just want to be free and be who they are

achieving equality

Nowadays the LGBTQ+ community has grown drastically and gained more space in society. They now have more equal rights than they once had in the past. However there still so much intolerance towards their sexuality coming from heterossexual people. In some places they still have to hide their identity because there’s a chance they still can suffer consequences. The society need to include them as anyone else, they are people with same capable abilities as a heterossexual person, there’s nothing different. I believe is more something about intolerance than anything else.

U.S impact

Since the repeal was announced the LGBTQ+ community that desired to join the military can now join and be open about their sexuality without being punished for being who they are.

In the future

This legislation opened more opportunities for this specific community, allowing them to be part of something by being themselves. It also can be a model to other areas to open the same opportunities for the LGBTQ+ giving them the same rights as everybody else.
