By how much do different household cleaners effect bacteria and which cleaners are most effective at eliminating bacteria?

By Betty Hill

Hypothesis

If samples of bacteria from the same counter top are sprayed with different all purpose cleaners such as Lysol, Ecosense,Green Works, Mr. Clean, and Method, then the sample sprayed with Method will remove the most bacteria.

Source 1: All of the ingredients in Method are non- hazardous and the company itself tries very hard to be as green as it can. Sales have gone up and Method is becoming a much more poplular cleaning choice

Bachground Info.

Source 2: Lysol has some of the most chemicals in their products compared to other cleaning products. The company does not offer much information about the other ingredients or how they make their products compared to other companies.

Materials:

  • Petri dishes with agor
  • Sterile Q tip or cotton tip applicator
  • Any material to hold dishes together (cellophane, ziploc bag)
  • I bottle of lysol, Mr.Clean, Method, Greenworks , an Ecosense

Procedure and Materials

1). Gather materials, 2). Find area that's good for bacteria samples, 3). Swab area with q tip or cotton tipped applicator, 4). Place on petri dish, 5). Leave on dish as a control, 6). Seal petri dishes shut, 7). Let the bacteria grow in dark room tempature place for 4- 6 days, 8). After bacteria is grown spray each cleaner 5 times, 9). Put in same place the bacteria was grown and leave it for 1 day, 10). Compare sprayed dishes to the one that was left alone, 11). Make Conclusion

Each cleaner killed a certain amount of bacteria here are the results:

Lysol: 87% killed

Mr.Clean: 80% killed

Method: 65% killed

Greenworks: 45% killed

Ecosense: 22% killed

Conclusion

By how much do different household cleaners effect bacteria and which cleaners are most effective at eliminating bacteria? Lysol killed the most bacteria and the amounts killed ranges from 87 to 27. If samples of bacteria from the same counter top are sprayed with different all purpose cleaners such as Lysol, Ecosense,Green Works, Mr. Clean, and Method, then the sample sprayed with Method will remove the most bacteria. The research did not accept the hypothesis because it stated that Method would kill the most bacteria when it was actually Lysol. The Independent variables were the all- purpose cleaner Lysol, Ecosense,Green Works, Mr. Clean, and Methods and the Dependent variable is the bacteria because how much of it is killed or not depends on the cleaners. If this experiment were done again the experimenter would have all chemical, non- green cleaners sense those did the best compared to the green non- hazardous cleaners to find out which one really is the best and why by looking at which chemicals are in all of the top cleaners.
