While we can still save our forests
Deforestation is the action of clearing a wide area of trees to convert the forest to a non-forest use.
Deforestation can involve conversion of forest land to farms, ranches, or urban use.
31%
of Earth's land surface is covered by forests.
The loss of trees and other vegetation can cause climate change, desertification, soil erosion, fewer crops, flooding, increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and a host of problems for indigenous people.
Without the tree roots to act as a anchor to the soil, erosion can occur and sweep the soil into the rivers.
The crops that people plant often don't have strong enough roots to hold the soil together.
Forests help lessen the amount of carbon dioxide in the air, but when the trees are cut down and burned, they release carbon dioxide into the air.
By having more carbon dioxide in the air, the weather patterns become more extreme, leading to warmer summers and colder winters.
The forests/rain forests are home to around
10 million different species of animals.
When we cut down the trees, we are destroying the animal's natural habitat. Thousands of species of animals have already become extinct.
Trees are important to the water cycle because they absorb the rainfall and produce water vapor that is released into the atmosphere.
Trees help prevent water pollution.
Trees reduce water pollution by catching the rainfall. The water then runs down the trunk of the tree, and mulched trees act like sponges that filter the water naturally and use it to recharge groundwater supplies.
Behind deforestation:
Using more land for housing and urbanization, harvesting timber to create commercial items (paper, furniture, and houses), cattle ranching, and planting agricultural crops.
To combat deforestation.
BECOME A 'TREE HUGGER'
A 'tree hugger' is someone who is protective about forests/trees/wildlife.
HOW IT WILL HELP
Planting trees will help the future, because we are replacing the trees we cut down .
Paper is made out of trees, so by going paperless we are reducing some of the reasons for cutting down trees.
If you recycle your paper, it can be used to make more paper, again reducing the reason for deforestation.
By using organic fertilizers (compost), trees/plants are found to be less prone to diseases and pests. This is especially useful when replanting trees.
The Amazon rainforest is one of the largest forests that has been affected
by deforestation.
One in ten known species in the world lives in the Amazon rainforest:
40,000
plant species
2,200
fish
1,294
birds
427
mammals
428
amphibians
378
reptiles
have been scientifically classified in the region.
over
(1.1 million kilometers squared) of the Amazon has been destroyed by forest fires, bulldozers, machines, etc.
