Early life

Marcus was born on July 21, 1923 in Montreal, Quebec. He is the son of Esther and Myer Marcus and his interest in sciences and chemistry began at young age thanks to the influence of his two highly educated uncles.

Marcus attended Baron Byng High School where he excelled in Mathematics.

He went on to study at McGill University under Dr. Carl A. Winker.

Marcus took a lot of math courses which later helped him create his theory on electron transfer.

He earned his B.Sc in 1943 and a Ph.D in 1946 from McGill University.

He eventually moved to the United States for a postdoctural research fellowship and went on to become an American citizen
