+ Bio Molecules +

By Matthew R., Grem S., and Mila A.

What are biomolecules?

Start Here

Biomolecules are organic molecules that are produced by a living organism.

The four biomolecules that we are describing ----->

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates

Examples of Carbohydrates :

Vegetables, milk, and bread are some examples, but lots of other foods have carbohydrates in them.

Examples

Functions of a Carbohydrate :

Carbohydrates' main functions are :

- Being our main source of energy. (Known as quick energy.)

- Helping with structural purposes.

Functions

Carbohydrates' structure :

Carbohydrates are made up of three elements, that can be described using the acronym 'CHO'. Carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, always in a ratio of 1:2:1.

Monomer

Carbohydrate monomers are named monosaccharides. That means 'one sugar'.

Structure of a Protien

A protien is made up of 4 elements; Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen and Nitrogen.

Protien Function

Function

The main functions of a protien are:

- Control rate of reactions

- Regulate cell processes

- Form skin, bones, and muscle

- Fight Disease

Examples

Examples of protiens include meat, fish, and eggs.

Lipids

Lipids

Lipids' Structure

Lipids are also made up of 'CHO'. (Carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.)

The two parts:

Lipids don't have a monomer. However, they do have two parts :

(1)Glycerol and (2)Fatty Acids. These are the building blocks of lipids.

Lipids' Parts

Functions of Lipids.

Lipids' main functions are:

- Storing energy.

- Biological membranes.

- Water proofing.

- Insulation and cushioning.

Functions

Examples

Some examples include items like fats, butter, oil, and waxes.

Examples

Nucleic Acid(s)

Nucleic Acids

Structure of Nucleic Acids

Structure

The structure of a Nucleic Acid is made up of 5 elements; Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus

Nucleic Acid Monomer

The monomer of a Nucleic Acid are Nucleotides.

Function

Functions

The main functions of a Nucleic Acid are:

- Store and pass genetic info

- Essential for making protien

- Controls cells activities

Examples

Examples of a Nucleic Acid are DNA and/or RNA
