The Moriori genocide happened in Chatham Islands between 1835 to the early 1860s. The Ngāti Mutunga and Ngāti Tama iw which were part of the Māori tribe of new zealand eventually moved to Chatham Islands. They eventually either murdered or enslave the Moriori. It happened because the Ngāti Mutunga and Ngāti Tama iwi had left the previous place they were living and were seeking somewhere else to live. And they wanted the land so they did anything to get it.

Post genocide

Not very many survived and the surviving people were enslaved and not very many lived. Eventually in 1870 the government court awarded 97 percent of land on Chatham Island to one of the Maori tribes on the basis of its “conquering” of the Moriori. The last Moriori of unmixed ancestry, Tommy Solomon, died in 1933, though there remain just under a thousand people who identify as Moriori.
