APFSDS

What it is and how it works

What it is

What is it?

An APFSDS round is the ammunition which most modern MBTs (Main Battle Tanks) use. basically a big steel dart fired from the tank is able to penetrate much more armour than it should

APFSDS is an acronym standing for

Armour Piercing Fin Stablized Discarding Sabot

how does it work?

The APFSDS Round splits apart mid air. making the round lighter than any ordinary calibers fired from a gun of that size (essentialy a bigger gun firing a smaller round than it should thus putting more power behind it.) they are usually made out of DU (Depleted Urainium)

How does it Work?

Why is it better than other ammo?

why is it better?

APFSDS rounds are usally utilized the most against tanks because they have more penetration than most other ammunition although tanks also use different rounds such as HEAT (High Explosive Anti Tank) for targets with less armour for if you use a Sabot round against a lesser armoured target you risk overpenetration (hitting the target but not doing any damage) And sometimes they carry anti infantry rounds that are basically just giant frag grenades or canister shells that are just giant shotguns

Topic 4

whats the damage?

When an APFSDS round hits its target it will leave a small entry hole damage components that allow the tank to work (gun aiming surfaces, engines, transmissions, and more violently ammo, which blows up the tank also the crew inside) sometimes the round will even leave an exit hole the round is designed to tear through enemy armour and almost never bounces like other rounds might.

Who uses them and whats the strongest?

who uses it?

almost all countries use APFSDS rounds But the some of the most powerful are the American rounds for the Abrams tank, this is because the Abrams loading breech is stronger than it should be. The breech was actually designed for a 140mm gun but used on a 120mm
