Do you believe assessment of learning styles lead to instruction that serves students better? Why or why not?

  • Before reading the material and watching the TED talk I always thought learning styles exsisted.
  • Now, I do not believe assessment of learning styles lead to instruction that seves students better.
  • Tesia Marshik gave three points that I agree with, and why I do not believe assessing learning styles is neccessary.
  • Most of what you learn is stored in terms of meaning.
  • The best way to learn or teach is based on the content itself.
  • Many things can be learned and taught using multiple senses.

Questions

  • Are teachers doing a disservice to the profession when they use strategies that aren't research based?
  • Where do the research fit into the day-to-day lives of teachers?
  • Should teachers care about research?
  • In your experience, do they care about research?

Opinions

  • I do not think that teachers are doing a disservice to their profession by using strategies that aren't research based. If whatever lesson you are doing is working for the students and they are learning I do not feel that it matters if it is research based.
  • A teacher may use research for lesson plans, and when helping a student with a disability. Having research can be beneficial to a teacher.
  • I think teachers should however care for research. I think that using research based strategies are necessary; however, it doesn't mean you aren't able to use non research based materials.
  • In my experience, teachers do care about research. Most of my teachers used research based methods in the classroom.

"It is wise to individualize instruction. Differentiation provides one framework for individualizing in the context of a heterogeneous classroom. Focusing on students' learning style adds little, if anything, of educational benefit to this process."

Response

I agree with the quote. I don't think teachers need to spend time figuring out each childs learning style, instead spend that time somewhere else. I believe all children will learn the material, some may just be quicker at understanding than others. I think it is wise to individualize instruction. Getting to know each individual student will make individualizing instruction easy.
