Movies

stories that we find exciting = our personal taste vs. higher level thinking process of evaluative judgement

Chapter 1 - Thinking Filmically: Learning How to Watch

Film literacy begins with an understanding of the language used and the ideas involved - all within cultural and historical contexts.

You are going to learn how to “read” and evaluate a film.

Why do we watch movies?

Reading a film: to watch a screen and scan the film, frame by frame, gathering information.

Speaking filmically: using proper terminology in the correct context.

Goal: develop a new, more informed kind of film watcher.

Film’s power to affect an audience

Is it because they make us feel a certain way?

What is it about movies that makes them feel the way they do?

Is it the narrative (story), the music, the characters, or the conflict?

Is it a battle? Space invaders? A love story?
