Here are four different etymological origins we come across for the surname Srivastava, which belongs to one of the twelve branches of the Kayastha community.

I. Its original Sanskrit form was Srivastavya, which has been morphed to Srivastava in the course of time.

II. Closely following the first etymology, the name Srivasa has assumed the form, Srivastava.

III. It has been derived from Srivastu, which was the earlier name of the river, Swat, now in Pakistan.

All these three derivations seem to be closely related, as vastavya/vasa in Sanskrit means, 'dwelling', and ‘Sri’ is held to be referring to a city, which in all likelihood was Srinagar, Kashmir. It thus refers to the Kayastha people who lived in and around Srinagar. This view also gets support from the fact that the river Swat (Srivastu) is not too far from Srinagar. Additionally, the fact that one of the earliest mentions of the Kayasthas is found in the history-chronicle of Kashmir — called the ‘Rajatarangini’, by the poet Kalhana — also supports this view.
