Meaning

Key

Elements

The Dish with One Spoon Wampum Agreement is a model constructed to facilitate a peaceful co-existence on this land both between the people and the animals that inhabit the territory.

The Dish

Represents the land (and it's resources) that is to be shared peacefully.

Covers Southern Ontario, from the Great Lakes to Quebec and from Lake Simcoe into the US.

The

Dish

The Spoon

Represents Individuals living on the land and using its resources in the spirit of mutual co-operation

All who reside on the land share a responsibility of ensuring that the dish is never empty

-> this includes taking care of the land and the creatures we share with it

The

Spoon

What else is on the table?

Most important aspect of this agreement is that there are no knives at the table.

All individuals that the agreement includes have a duty to keep the peace.

Table

Setting

Connection to Self

Settlers were invited into this agreement most notably in 1764 with the Royal Proclamation and the Treaty of Niagra

Treaty of Niagara established the relationship that was meant to be honoured by the new settlers moving into what became Canada

As individuals residing on the land we are still bound to the responsibility of upholding the ideals of the Dish with one Spoon agreement.

Why does it matter to us

Why included in Land Acknowledgments?

Why in Land Acknowledgments

motivates us to think about the relationship we have with the land we are on

Land acknowledgments are not meant to facilitate settler guilt, nor are they asking for a return of the land -

reminder that our great standard of living is directly related to the resources and friendship of Indigenous people.

Reminder of our responsibilities to the land and all the people that need to eat from the dish.

Asking us to remove all knives from the table and start passing the spoon again .

Metaphor for Reconciliation

Reconciliation

An excellent example of what the goal of reconciliation is.

shifting back to a peaceful co-existing and upholding the ideals of this agreement
