Ecology in

Poland

Created by Chrząszcze

for Youth Exchange

Current situation

Current state

-Main issue is the air pollution due to coal extraction, use in household heating and energy production

- Increase in deforestation during last 2 years: legislation allowed for larger trees to be cut and also controversial "protection" actions in UNESCO protected ancient forest of Białowieża,

- Failure to observe the new recycling and trash segregation legislation: garbage being sorted in households yet the garbage dump sites are not fully prepared to recieve sorted trash

Positives

- compulsory trash sorting in households

- free public transport when the air pollution surpasses the limits,

- no more free shopping bags

- public bikes available in major cities for negligible fee (25 cents per 1 hour)

- international earth day celebrated in Poland for more than 28 years now (public local area cleaning by pupils)

- EU funded workshops for young students increasing their environmental awareness

- tree planting and many more other actions spread around the country

Positives

Challenges

Challenges

- to improve air quality in south-western Poland (highly urbanized and industrialized region of Silezia)

- reduction of CO2 emission from fossil fuels burning (coal fueled power plants generate more than 90% of Polish energy)

- gradual shift of energy production profile of Poland (fossil fuels to renewables and non CO-2 emitting nuclear plants)

- increase the security measurements of chemical processing and pharmaceutical plants (emission of pollutants, in some regions higher than allowed limits)

Statistics

- from top 10 cities in Europe that had worst air quality in 2011 6 of them were Polish

- 94% of energy (electrical and heating) produced in Poland comes from coal combustion

Some Statistics

Conclusion

- in comparison to "old" EU countries Poland stays behind in terms of air quality and environment protection

- society is becoming more aware of environmental impact of individual activity

- EU regulations oblige Poland to increase its engagement in environment protection

- Poland tries to follow the example of western European country in terms of ecology
