Performance Based Assessment

Performance - Based Assessment

Background

Around the 1990's performance-based assessment became a valid alternative to standardized testing. Schools need to get waivers from their state or district to implement the alternative measure. (Hillard, 2015)

It measures student's ability to apply the skills and knowledge learned from a unit or units of study. (Hillard, 2015)

Performance-Based Assessment

What is it?

The assessment accurately measures one or more specific course standards . Additionally, it is:

1. Complex

2. Authentic

3. Process/ product-oriented

4. Open-ended

5. Time-bound

(Hillard, 2015)

As an alternative method to traditional standardized testing

How do we use it?

Can play to students, strengths, shows mastery of the material, can make the material more relevant

Provides students with empowered learning. Meaning that they are part of the outcome process. They are active learners and not passive learners.

Why Use It?

Makes the material more relatable to the students. This done through the instructor building the class assessment.

"A performance assessment is a better tool for gathering evidence about what students can do with their knowledge" ("Performance Assessment: What Is It and Why Use It?", 2016)
