FIRE PREVENTIVE MEASURES
for
THE TOP 3 CAUSES OF FIRE
1. Electrical ignition caused by Arcing
- Do not use outlets or cords that have exposed wirings.
- Do not block access to panels and circuit breakers or fuse boxes.
- Do not touch a person or electrical apparatus in the event of an electrical incident.
- Call an electrician who can safely look at your junction boxes, outlets, switches, and wiring to see what the issue might be.
- Make sure that all installations of wirings and other electrical systems in your houses or building must be done by a Certified Electrician.
- Always Disconnect. This means unplugging an appliance that requires repairs or turning off the circuit breaker.
2. Electrical ignition caused by Loosed Connection
- The best way to prevent electrical fires is to make sure that all electrical work is done by a trained electrician.
- Regular maintenance and checking of fuse box.
- Choose safety and quality appliances.
- Child-proofing electrical appliances.
- Responsible use of Extension Cords and do not overload usage.
- Proper lighting fixtures.
- Turn off equipment when not in use.
3. Open flame from cooking
- Never leave your stove unattended while cooking.
-Keep an eye on what you fry. Most cooking fires start when someone is frying food.
-Watch what you are cooking. Fires start when the heat is too high. If you see any smoke or the grease starts to boil, turn the burner off.
- Keep your cooking area free of combustible materials.
- Make sure you are awake and alert. Alcohol and some drugs can make you sleepy.
- Make sure children and pets stay at least 3 feet away from a hot stove.
- Keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
3. Open flame from cooking
- Keep cooking equipment clean to prevent grease build-up.
- Wear short sleeves or roll them up so they don’t catch fire.
- Move things that can burn away from the stove. This includes dishtowels, bags, boxes, papers, curtains, etc.
- Turn pot handles at the back of the stove, so that no one can bump or pull them over.
- Keep a pan lid nearby. This is use to cover the pan when it catches fire.
Supression of Fire
- Fire suppression or firefighting is the procedure or activity of mitigating the results of fire that already has started.
- Fire can be controlled or extinguished, either manually (firefighting) or automatically. Manual includes the use of a fire extinguishers or a standpipe system. Automatic means can include a fire sprinkler system, a gaseous clean agent, or firefighting foam system. Automatic suppression systems would usually be found in large commercial kitchens or other high-risk areas.
Four (4) METHODS OF FIRE SUPPRESSION/EXTINGUISMENT:
1. Temperature Reduction – Cooling
2. Fuel Removal – Starving
3. Oxygen Dilution – Blanketing / Smothering
4. Inhibition of the Chain Reaction – use of foam in extinguishing the fire
Elements of Fire
- Fire triangle or combustion triangle is a simple model for understanding the necessary ingredients for most fires
- However, later on this concept was changed from Fire Triangle into Fire Tetrahedron in order to reflect the fourth element of fire called “a chemical chain reaction” which was a necessary component of fire because the presence of the first 3 elements alone may not result into combustion unless there was a chemical chain reaction between them.
