Tree Diagrams

Quick Review

What is the probability of an event?

Ex. What is the probability of rolling a 6 on a die, or having a coin land on heads?

The events of landing a head on a coin, or

rolling a 6 on a die are 2 independent events.

Events are considered to be independent if the result of

one does not depend on the result of another.

Events are considered dependent if the result of one event affects the probability of the other.

What are some examples of 2 independent events?

IXL Practice EE.8 Identify independent and dependent events

A table is another common way

to list independent outcomes.

A tree diagram is a common way to show the possible outcomes for an experiment that has 2 independent events.

Ex. Tossing a coin twice

What is the prob of

a coin landing on heads

twice ?

4 possible

outcomes

A coin and a die are thrown at random. Find the probability of:

a) getting a head and an even number

b) getting a head or tail and an odd number

Hint: What are the total number of outcomes?
