6 Step Decision

Making Model

Define the Problem

I want to go to a good college for business. But I don't know if I want to go in-state or out-of-state college.

Step 1

Step 2

Identify the Choices

My choices are good business colleges in-state or good business colleges out-of-state. While I'm not sure what college I want to go specifically, this decision narrows down my options.

Evaluate the Advantages and Disadvantages

In-State

Pros:

  • The tuition cheaper.
  • I will be closer to home.

Cons:

  • I won't be able to see other places before having a career.

Step 3

Out-of-State

Pros:

  • I would have new experiences that I couldn't have in Texas.
  • I can meet new people that I wouldn't have met in Texas.

Cons:

  • The tuition is a lot more expensive.
  • I will be farther away from home.

Choose the Best Alternative

I chose an out-of-state school because I think it would help me get a better perceptive of other places. I think that with scholarships and other types of aid I should be able to go to an out-of-state school with as much debt as I would have in-state.

Step 4

Act on Your Choice

I went to an out-of-state school for 5 years and earned my master's degree in business. I wasn't able to visit home regularly.

Step 5

Review Your Decision

I enjoyed the new experiences that I wasn't able to have at home. I met new people and felt like I belonged in two places, Texas and the new place my college is located.
