Lieutenant Kotler is presented in the book when Bruno and his family move to Out-With. He is a nineteen year old Nazi soldier who frequents Bruno's house often. He thinks of himself as important, throughout the book Lieutenant makes us aware of the Nazi cruelty towards Jews.
Kotler physical description is
Lieutenant Kotler treats Father's family in a insincere way were he wants to impress Father, and acts friendly with Mother and Gretel, but has a rasping relationship with Bruno.
Wile Gretel and mother greatly enjoy Kotler's presence, Bruno feel's a cold and unpleasant feeling when Liuetenant is around.
Quote from book
"Lietenant Kotler was deep in conversation with Gretel and whatever he was saying must have been terribly funny because she was laughing loudly twirling her hair around her fingers into ringlets" (72).

Bruno didn't like him because he always had a negative attitude and always called him “little man” because he was small. Lieutenant often made Bruno scared and intimidated he had no warmth in his eyes. Bruno always tried to avoid talking to Lieutenant Kotler but when they did talk bruno was always sarcastic.
Lieutenant Kotler speaks about his family as if he were hidding something or felt ashamed.
Bruno's father invited Kotler over for dinner. Lieutenant Kotler talks about how he lost touch with his father who left Germany to go to Switzerland. Father asks some questions about why his father left instead of helping his country. Kotler acts nervous and says he doesn't know and he eventually gets transferred away from Out-With.
Overall, Lieutenant Kotler was the typical Nazi Soldier he had no warmth in his eyes. Because of him we can visualize how awful they treated Jews during the Holocaust. But something we can learn through this character is that how we treat others is how we are going to be treated. The reason why I say this is because I can infer that Lieutenant could of been sent away and killed because he might of been Jewish.
