Fast food trash is playing a big part pollution the problem is most fast food packaging isn't being recycled. Its not being recycled because its not easily compostable And doesn't break down easily in the environment . Packaging that is used to contain food makes up 45% of all US landfills.
How it affects the earth
Since fast food is packaged using a plastic called polystyrene, which isn't biodegradable meaning its harder for it to break down in the environment. Its also very easily moved by the wind making more litter. When the packaging is being picked up by the wind it can drift into the water and pollute the oceans.
Since the packaging is going into the ocean they are effecting the marine life. Turtles reproduction rates have been dropping because of the levels of plastic found in their stomachs. Studies have found that if a sea turtle eats only 14 pieces of plastic its at a high risk of death. Turtles also get plastic straws stuck in their nose which prevents them from breathing.
Some of the solutions that are in effect right now are fast food chains making packaging out of recycled material. For example McDonalds is planing to have every single item of their packaging made from recycled materials by 2025. Another solution that we could help with is just eating less fast food. Around 37% of adults in America eat fast food regularly.
