WHAT IS DMD?

: Jakob White

What Is DMD

DMD or “Duchenne muscular dystrophy” is when the dystrophin in someone's muscles is defective.

What Does deformed Dystrophin Make Happen

The removal of the old and fine healthy protein leads to the addition of scar tissue and fat in its place.

What Does This Affect

How Does DMD Happen?

DMD is the result of a malformation in someones DNA that shortens dystrophin.

how Does DMD Happen

How Does The Dystrophin Get Shortened

There is a malformation in the DNA for making dystrophin. This malformation creates a stop code for the ribosomes and stops the production of that strand of dystrophin

What is a stop code?

a stop code is a base from the DNA that causes the ribosomes to stop making that amino acid chain.

What is a stop code?

it all starts at the DNA which is malformed from a gene.

there are different DMD genes that do different things to the DNA, but they all create a stop code for the ribosomes.

how does it happen?

How Does Someone Get DMD?

you can only have DMD if you the gene given to you by your parents when you are born.

How Does Someone Get DMD

DMD is a recessive sex-linked trait on the X chromosome.

what Does That Mean?

A sex-linked trait is a trait carried on the sex chromosomes (X Y crhomosomes). A recessive trait is a trait that you need two copys of to have.

lastly, DMD is carried on the X chromosome, females have XX crhomosomes and males have XY chromosomes.

What Does That Mean?

The recessive trait of DMD means that if you have two X chromosomes(females) both need to have the trait, while males need one because they only have X chromosome.

why do mostly boys have DMD
