Bessie Coleman

Artifact 1

Paragraph

This artifact is an obituary for Bessie Coleman. The obituary states the day she was born, the day she died, how old she was, how she died, and the adversaries she faced. Though she passed at a young age, Bessie would frequently state, “The air is the only place to be free from prejudices (Coleman).” Because she had searched for countless flight schools in the States that would allow her to train, and to no avail, it only made sense that the air would be the place for her. No one would be there to refuse her because of her race and gender. My artifact and quote have the same theme because an obituary, while sad, should highlight one’s life positively. The quote is equally sad because it shows the reality of being an African American woman in the aviation industry but highlights how important it is to be determined.

Artifact 2

Paragraph

This artifact is a news report for Bessie Coleman. The report informs viewers that Bessie passed away. “On April 30, 1926, Coleman was tragically killed at only 34 years old when an accident during a rehearsal for an aerial show sent her plummeting to her death (Biography.com).” The use of the word “tragically” strengthens the argument that her death affected aviators and the world alike. My artifact and quote have the same theme because well-respected and known individuals tend to receive mass media attention following their death.

Artifact 3

Paragraph

This artifact is a headline celebrating the 100th anniversary of Bessie Coleman receiving her Private Pilot License. The headline details the date she received her PPL and from whom. “Known for performing flying tricks, Coleman’s nicknames were: ‘Brave Bessie,’ ‘Queen Bess,’ and ‘The Only Race Aviatrix in the World’” (Alexander). The nicknames she received were fitting because she set a new precedent for the aviation industry, showing that women are just as capable of flying as men. My artifact and quote have the same theme because the headline highlights a significant event in her life, just as the quote highlights her as a person and, more specifically, an aviator.

Artifact 4

Paragraph

This artifact is a pro/con list that identifies three pros of Coleman’s life and three cons of Coleman’s life. The list highlights a total of six events from her life that are of the utmost importance. “‘Bessie was a real gutsy woman for the era,’ says Dorothy Cochrane, a curator at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, where a collection of photographs and archival materials documents the life of the aviator" (Cochrane). The use of the word “gutsy” strengthens the argument for how many risks she took. My artifact and quote have the same theme because the first item on the cons list is about the risks she took, which is evident by the words used to describe her.

Artifact 5

This artifact is a photo of Bessie Coleman. The image depicts Coleman following her passion: flying. “When her brother John returned from fighting in France during World War I, he told stories of the freedom that women overseas enjoyed. They could be pilots, he said. That sparked Bessie’s new dream: to be an aviatrix” (Fleur). Her brother’s stories initiated her desire to become a pilot. My artifact and quote have the same theme because the photo suggests Bessie enjoys doing what she loves, which corresponds with her dream.
