Exposition

In a society where it is set in the future United States, where the action of Unwinding is legal, and getting out of hand. The story starts in different POV's with Connor and Lev on the search to find a woman named Sonia and having to hide because they are being scouted throughout the world, Risa alone and trying to survive, and Starkey raising an army of Unwinds known as "Storks", who are against other Unwinds. Then there is Nelson, Nelson is an exofficer hunting down Connor. Cam is a Rewind who is made entirely out of part of Unwound kids. He is against the people who made him. This story, is where they want to restore it back to how it was before Unwinding was invented.

Exposition

Rising action

-Connor and Lev are struggling to stay together when they encounter a fan of Connors', they encounter even more problems.

-Risa had escaped from the very place that gave her her legs back and now shes on the run to go home. until she heard about the home she was running too was destroyed and she just hoped they didn't catch Connor or anyone that was important to her.

- Connor -being kidnapped by his "fan"- soon runs with the kidnappers sister, Grace. Grace and Conner later find Lev by hitting him with their car. After that they go to the ChanceFolk reservation to heal and lie low.

- Risa gets caught in unwinds trap but saved by Cyrus and eventually ends up meeting Conner at the place he wanted to go.

Internal conflict

One of the major internal conflict in the book UnSouled was with Connor and Cam. With Connor he was always thinking that he had to do everything by himself for the safety of others. Connor was always thinking he needed to act and not wait, he was always trying to get things done, but he learned that being patient was also a good thing. On the other hand, Cam is fighting within himself and learning all the other unwounds memories. Thinking he is not supposed to be in the world because he wasn't chosen to be and not finding himself with the parts he was made out of. Lev is also trying to redeem himself for getting a important person into a trap and giving himself up for the other unwind refugees.

Internal conflict

External conflict

With the government trying to find Connor the Akron AWOL and bring all the other refugees hope to an end. While Starky is making a statement by breaking in the unwinding houses, he is making sure the government knows that there is someone else that can lead other unwinds. Connor is only trying to get to a certain location, but there is always something that happens where he can't leave the ChanceFolk safe home. Until he does he finds himself in another difficult situation.

External conflict

Falling action

Starkey accidentally becomes a pawn for the enemy, who use his "Terrorist" ways to promote their own Pro-Unwinding ideas. Connor, Grace leave the residence without Lev, but take Cam with them to find Sonia. Then they met Risa with Sonia, with a completely different look to her. On their journey, Cam was taken back by his creators and was knocked out that way he didn't put up a fight because he was strong than most.

Major Literary

One of the Major literary device that the author uses is a metaphor which helps the reader understand what hope means in this book. Throughout the book the main characters are driven by hope, meaning that no matter what you do it will always exist in a person, even if you try to get rid of it, this idea will never disappear, “Hope can be bruised and battered. It can be forced underground and eve rendered unconscious, but hope cannot be killed.” (Shusterman 403). This helps make the understanding of what hope means in this book. It is used in this quote because throughout the storyline and the series, hope played a major role in the main character's desire to live and survive in their harsh society. This also gives more understanding of the characters and allowing me to feel connected to them.

Minor Literary Analysis

One of the Minor literary term that Neal uses is personification which helps make the reader see what the characters feel with a different description. When Connor accidently hits an animal, it sends the car off the side of the road, the author adds, “The quiet that follows feels like the airless silence of space, but for the soulness moan of the wind.” (Shusterman 6). This is a great example of personification because, it adds more detail on how the characters emotion in the situation that they are in. The author uses very detailed and descriptive wording while using personification throughout the story, this only being one of the many examples. While using it in this way the author can draw more feelings out of small and unnoticeable emotions out of the characters which helps strengthen the story and help the reader understand what their going through.

The third Minor literary devices he uses is foreshadow which helps make the reader to think what is going to happen in further in the story. In the beginning of the story, Janson Rheinschild is stating how their new invention will not be abused “Surely this new medical technology will free us rather than enslave us for it is my firm belief that human compassion outweighs human greed. To that end, I hereby found Proactive Citizenry to be a stalwart watchdog over the ethical use of neurografting. I am confident that abuses will be the exception rather than the rule.”(Shusterman 1). This is a perfect example of foreshadowing because, later on they are people abusing the power and going against what the creator's original purpose was for creating this medical purpose . This is not only noticeable in this storyline but it plays a big role in the series overall as the antagonists idea are influenced by trying to make the perfect human.

Reflection

I personally think it’s a really good book. I really like the way it relates to the world and its problems. There are a lot of internal conflicts that even teenagers like us have. At the same time, I am also thankful that we don't live in that kind of society. It is horrible what they do to teenagers that do behave badly, but it’s also a phase. That is the time teenagers get to experience and live a life where they feel like they can do anything that is in their power. Instead, in the book, teenagers are being raised with a fear of getting unwind. I guess they are trying to have a society that will have a future with no troubled teens. To be honest, that is just being controlled by the government or the police like they are in this society. It’s no different than the government is trying to take control. Other than that, the characters are trying to fight off, get a way out of the hole and try not to let that happen. I would recommend this book because like I said it realates to modern times and the future that may or may not come, of course its just a book, but they are teenagers and fighting against the whole country.

Thematic Topic

"Coming of Age"

"UnSouled" fits into the theme of "coming of age" because teenagers and kids are called "feral" and pictured as evil in the media. To promote unwinding, consent from the teens is ignored by showing how dangerous, and unwanted they are. In real life, lots of kids feel unwanted by their parents or the world, and can relate. The teenagers in UnSouled fight back to show the world they are their own people, who aren't ferocious and deserve to live their own lives, not as parts.

3 Dominant Thematic Topics

#1

Controlled- Don't let the media fool you, as it's often glossing over the details.

Ex: Proactive Citizenry quickly covers up the negative aspects of unwinding, and constantly pressures the concept to be human and the right choice.

Thematic Topic 1

#2

Charging Foward- If you're going to go against something, go against it full-on and work to make a difference.

Ex: The group of three starts off passively avoiding being caught by the Juvenile Authority, but are soon running toward answers to help them fight against the system

Thematic Topic 2

#3

Power- The overuse of power by parents/guardians and the government is also a key part in this novel.

Ex: The Power the parents can have by sending their unwanted child to be useful somewhere else, and how government is taking total control of the device that Janson Rheinschild invented and erased him off the map.

Quote:

“No true hero ever believes that they are one.”

Reflection:

I like this quote because it is not based off of greed. Usually people are greedy and would like to get the attention. Which in the book they didn't, they wanted to get away from the attention because it put to much pressure and stress when a hundred or so people are looking up to you. Knowing you don't think of your self as a hero, you know your doing the right thing and feel happy about it.
