Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor

Japan attacked on Pearl Harbor because they wanted to prevent the US from attacking Japan, they wanted to continue to take over countries in Southeast Asia,

and they wanted to cripple the US Navy

Bataan Death March

April 1942

American soldiers were forced to march 60 miles to prison camps by their Japanese captors. It is called the Death March because so may of the prisoners died on route.

Doolittle raid

April 18,1942

The first raid conducted by the U.S against Tokyo in April 1942. It was commanded by James Doolittle and involved the use of light bombers flying off the deck of an aircraft carrier in the north pacific. It caused little damage but lifted the spirits of the Americans, this ended April 18, 1942.

Island hopping -was the way WW2 strategy of conquering only certain Pacific islands that were important to the allied advance toward Japan

Battle of Midway

June 4,1942- June 7, 1942

The battle of Midway was one of the most decisive battle in the pacific theater. It took place from June 3 to 7 1942. It was between the Japanese and the Americans. It was the biggest carrier battle of world war two. The Japanese surprised attack the American carriers by attacking the Coral islands. It was a mostly air battle between fighter planes. They used a lot of dive bombers and torpedo bombers which granted the americans victory. They won also because of the code breakers which showed where the Japanese were attacking.

Battle of Iwo Jima

February 19, 1945 – March 26, 1945

Battle of Iwo Jima is a battle during the Pacific War, as known as the part of World War II. This battle started from 19th February and ended at 26th March 1945. It was a war between United States and Japan at a small island near Tokyo called the Iwo Jima. The U.S Marine eventually captured the island from Japan.

Battle of Okinawa

April 1, 1945 – June 22, 1945

Largest amphibious assault in the Pacific War, 82-day-long battle. After a long campaign of island hopping, the Allies were approaching Japan, and planned to use a large island close to mainland Japan as a base for air operations on the planned invasion of Japanese mainland.

U.S. Dropped Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima on Nagasaki

August 6, 1945

The nuclear attacks on the Empire of Japan during World War II . The United States and the Allies were fighting against Japan and slowly winning. Two nuclear weapons were dropped on Japan, one on the city of Hiroshima and the other on the city of Nagasaki.

Manhattan Project-The code name for the effort to develop atomic bombs (see also atomic bomb) for the United States during World War II. The first controlled nuclear reaction took place in Chicago in 1942, and by 1945, bombs had been manufactured that used this chain reaction to produce great explosive force.

Japan Surrenders

August 15, 1945

It was the deployment of a new and terrible weapon, the atomic bomb, which forced the Japanese into a surrender that they had vowed never to accept. Harry Truman would go on to officially name September 2, 1945, V-J Day, the day the Japanese signed the official surrender aboard the USS Missouri.
