Their foot shall slide in due time.

What does this mean to you?

To Edwards...

It meant that sinners and the unfaithful would go to hell.

But...have you ever made a mistake? Have you ever done something "wrong"? Did your morals or beliefs ever waver? A time when you weren't sure what was right?

Logos

If you sin, you go to hell.

"There is no other reason to be given why you have not dropped into hell...but that God's hand has held you up.

God can keep us from ending up in hell and has complete control over our lives, so we must avoid sinning and follow his laws.

Ethos

His role as a minister gives his credibility

Puritan Tattoos

Now, I know that most Puritans wouldn't get tattoos...but if a follower of Jonathan Edwards got one, what would it look like?

Maybe they were so inspired by this sermon that they would want to brand themselves with the preacher’s powerful words! Here are the requirements for your tattoo.

Your tattoo must include

• 2 quotes from the sermon (these can be phrases or part of a sentence)

  • At least one example of figurative language (may be included in your images or quotes)

• At least 3 different images from the sermon

• A creative design

On the back, you will write a short paragraph explanation the rationale for your tattoo. Here are some sentence starters. Use these to get you started and then develop your explanation.

This tattoo reflects the _____________in Edwards' piece. These images _____________and motivate the audience to____________.
