Big Idea:

God's name is great, so honour him above all else

Honour

How to Honour the Name?

Bring My Best to God

Worship is a sacrifice, by its very nature it requires us to give something up

We dishonour God when we don’t give God our best…anytime we don’t offer our best

Col.3:17 whatever you do, in word of deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Giving my best to God in worship?

• Arriving on time with hearts prepped and eager to worship God…or am I here to check a box with God?

• Thoughts focused on God and worshiping him or are they wandering to what’s for lunch or the person beside me

• engaging in the singing…singing from my heart, not just words, or am I simply a spectator making excuses for why I can’t or won’t sing…

• Carefully and gratefully listening to God’s Word ready to apply it to my life, or am I thinking of how this applies well to my spouse, or kids or friend down the street…

Matthew 15:7-8

You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said, this people honours me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.

Consequences

Consequences to Dishonouring God:

Price #1:

Unanswered Prayer

John Benton: God’s answering our prayers does not depend on our being sinless. If this was the case no one would have their prayers answered…However, God’s hearing our prayer does depend on our being serious about the fight against sin in our lives. It is not the presence of sin, but the toleration of sin which shuts down communication with heaven. (losing Touch p.53)

Price #2: Worthless Worship

Psalm 51:16-17

For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Topic

God's Great Name

The Lord of Hosts=The God of Angel Armies

God is jealous for the glory of His name

Nothing brings God more glory than the Gospel of Jesus!

John 17:1

Father the hour has come, glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you

Topic

Profaning the Name:

1. Serving God has no value in my life

2. It's pointless to worship God--we get nothing out of it.

3. Snorting at serving God

Making a Vow to God:

Deut.23:21-23--If you make a vow to the Lord your god, you shall not delay in fulfilling it, for the Lord your God will surely require it of you, and you will be guilty of sin. But if you refrain from vowing, you will not be guilty of sin. You shall be careful to do what has passed your lips, for you have voluntarily vowed to the Lord your God what you have promised with your mouth.

Because God is so Great, He deserves my EVERYTHING!

Where do you need to honour God more in our life?

What is He taking second place to?

Where are you giving Him the leftovers...
