Daughter of War

By Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch

Basic Plot Details

Introduction

This book tells the story of young Armenians, Marta and Kevork who fell in love and then were separated because of World War I. During the war the Turkish believed that the Armenians were not important so they started slowly killing them. They began with women and children. They gave them a choice to either die or become prostitute who they could sell to rich men. Marta was one of the girls that was sent to a man named Iris to become his slave, after he got her pregnant he throw her out and she made her way back to her old orphanage were she would be safe. Meanwhile, Kevork is living on his own and working at a local market, everyday he thinks about Marta and wonders if she is still alive. Kevork is determined to get back to Marta and stop with war between the Turkish and Armenians. One day he gets stop by an Armenian solider and is asked to complete a mission for him, one that if caught will end in his death. This novel tells a story about Kevork dangerous mission to stop the war and find Marta and how Marta has to cope with the past and deal with the future to come.

Main Thematic Issue

Main Social Issue: The book deals with the theme of human rights and women rights, it talks about how during some wars the women and children were either marched out into the desert to die, sent to refugee camps or became prostitutes for rich men.

Another theme in this book is love and how the person you love should love you for who you are not what mistakes or problems you have been through.

Main Thematic Message

Conflicts

Man vs. Man (Marta vs. Her thoughts in her head)

- Marta had a lot of time on her hands and she often catches her self-thinking about Kevork and if he will still love her.

- She also worries that he will not accept the baby as his own, and that he will leave her because of her daughter. She gets so caught up in her worries that at one point she thinks about getting rid of the baby with "herbs that [she] can take" (Skrypuch 48).

Man vs. Society (Women vs. Society)

- Armenians women that lived at this time had to go through terrible experiences such as become a prostitute, or even watching their own children die in their arms.

- The Turkish government believe that women and young girls were no use to them unless they wanted to be there slaves or prostitutes. There were many strong women that tried to stand up for their rights but they all died in the process.

- “My slave girl needs the exercise" (Skrypuch 9).

Man vs. Man (Americans vs. Turkish)

-This book takes place during World War I when the Turkish invaded Armenians and took many lives, mostly women and children. The Turkish believe the Armenians were not important to their world and wanted them gone

- "More than 30, 000 Armenians were slaughtered in the matter of days" (Skrypuch viii).

Symbolism

- In this story Kevork is a shoe maker who has probably made shoes for every person in his little town. He also makes shoes for himself and he puts his favorite shoes on every time he is sent on a mission. I think the shoes symbolize that Kevork will never give up if he has them on, and as long as he has his shoes the will find Marta and save all the Armenians is strong and he is capable of this mission.

-Another is symbol is Marta daughter, she symbolizes that thier life is going to start to change and that her being born is positive and the positivity will spread.

Symbolism

Figurative Language

Simile

-Well Kevork was out on his journey to deliver money to some of the poor living in refugee camps he saw the faces of many sad, hurt and depressed women. He saw the faces of women who had just lost their children and whole families. One women stand out the most, he said she had a "wizened face [that] was shriveled like a discarded apple" (Skrypuch 74).

Comparisons

Between Catcher in the Rye and Midsummer Nights Dream

Comparisons

Daughter of War and Midsummer Night’s Dream

-In both of these story’s the women are treated like they are an object that can be thrown around and told what they can or can’t do. In Midsummer Hermia is told by her father that she must marry Demetrius because he says "as she is mine, I may dispose of her" (I. i. 43). In Daughter of War the men tell the women what they have to do for them too and sometimes it is forced.

Daughter of War and the Catcher in the Rye

- Main character in both of these novel have to deal with the strong and powerful voice that is in there heads. Holden is constantly talking to himself and sometimes he tells himself that this is a bad idea or if you go in you will ruin your good memory. Marta also has to deal with this too because she keep telling her self that Kevork will no longer love her, when she just need to wait and see and not get her self-worked up.

Three Technigues

Different

Techniques

1) The first technique that this ad uses is testimonial/ endorsement, which mean that the company uses celebrates to promote there company and draw people attention to it. This ad uses Serena Williams to promote its product and because she is really well know female athlete.

2) Another technique that this company uses is appeal to emotion because Serena is using her daughter in the ad and she is adorable. When ads use babies or cute puppies the audience remember the ad and thinks about it. It also appeals to your emotion because it is very heart warming the way Serena talks to her daughter.

3) Finally the explicit message is very powerful, Serena says that life is a game that you must play and it can be hard sometime but in the end if you don’t give up you will make it somewhere. Sporst are very important and can help you off the field too.

Overall effectivenss of the Ad

I really like this ad because it is telling girls to never give up even if life starts to get hard or you feel like you are failing. This relates to Daughter of War because Marta did not give up on Kevork, she did not give up on the baby and give her away, and in the end she won. This ad is very effective because it concises you that if you stay strong, never give up and be there for each other you can accomplish pretty much anything.

Overall affectiveness of the Ad

Conclution

I really enjoyed reading this book because of the suspense it left after every chapter. I also like this book because I really enjoy read books about human and women rights and I believe that this book clears stated that in third world country there are problem with women’s rights and how girl and women are being treated. This book shows that if these are people in the world that care “together we can make a difference" -Me to We
