Mount Erebus Disaster

- Caleb Richardson

Introduction:

Mount Erebus:

A catastrophe called Mount Erebus happened on November 28, 1979. Tourists were on board a plane returning to New Zealand from Antarctica when their navigation system went awry, causing the plane to crash into Mount Erebus and killing everyone on board.

What happened?

When travelling by plane to Antarctica for vacation. They were supposed to go around Mount Erebus, but a knowledgeable flight crew led them to believe they could go over instead. The disaster that claimed the lives of all 247 aboard was brought on by a combination of inexperienced pilots and bad navigational data. Even if they had survived the original collision, they would have perished from the subzero temperatures or from their injuries.

How it happened?

How it Happened

New flight crew and erroneous coordinates were the two key contributing factors to the tragedy. Because of what the coordinates indicated, the new flight crew believed they could ascend further. It was a snowy, hazy day that made flying challenging. Before it was too late, the flight crew was unaware that they were about to crash. Unfortunately, this was not the case even though the coordinates indicated that they were still over the water and far from the mountain.

When it happened

This catastrophic life changing event occurred on the 28 November, 1979.

When it happened

What did the body rescue crew have to do?

What did body rescue crew do?

A crew of brave individuals were required to travel to the accident site a few days after it occurred in order to retrieve the dead. Right adjacent to the crash site, they established camp. You would have had little sleep because to the bodies and seagulls in the area, and since you were working 12-hour shifts, you would have been exhausted after just one day, let alone for weeks on end. In total, 114 substantially intact bodies, 133 bags of human remains, and innumerable items were found.

Conclusion

Overall what happened over those many days of grief and the people who had to recover the bodies would have been so sad and changed so many different families lives forever. Mount Erebus to this day still has the highest mortality rate in a disaster to this day. Killing 257 people and ruining the recovery crues lives this tradgedy will never be forgotten and will stay as a massive part of New Zealand history.

Evaluation:

What did I learn

What did I learn?

I learnt that a huge amount of people died and that this would have been a struggle for so many people. I learnt that the challenge of recovering all of those bodies was a treaturous difficult task for all of the people who went. I learnt that even if you think you can do something that is more efficient or something like that, that you should follow the original plans.

What challenges I had

Some of the challenges I had include finding information and if the information was correct or made up. Another challenge was some website just went on and on about nothing that I cared about or needed and I had to skim read through whole articles to find a tiny little bit of information. Other than that there were a lot of websites on this disaster because it was a huge thing to happen,
