Hamiltion Howard 'Albert' Fish
Albert Fish and his beginning .The story on the upbringing of Hamilton Howard Albert Fish. Portrayed is the Saint Johns Orphanage in Washington D.C.
Albert Fish was the son of Ellen (32 years) and Randall Fish (75 years).
Randall passed away at the age of 80 leaving Ellen to care for 5 year old Albert and his three siblings Walter, Annie, and Edwin.
His entire family suffered from mental illness:
-brother was committed to a state run asylum
-his mother frequently had visual and auditory hallucinations
-his uncle was diagnosed with mania
-his father also showed signs of mental illness, although not much is documented about him. The Evening Star publication on October 18th in 1875 stated that he was of senile debility and escorted to the Washington Asylum Hospital within an ambulance after being removed from a local dining hall. It is not widely known about the diagnosis of Randall Fish seeing he passed away in 1875.
* some other interesting information about mental illness in Albert Fish's ancestry is that Rebecca Norse and Mary Estey were hung for delusions and witchcraft in 1692 (These women were the children of his great x6 grandparents).
After Randall Fish passed away Ellen was left to care for all four children on her own. Seeing her poor mental state and low income she felt she was unable to care for these children.
She sent her children to the Saint Johns Orphanage, Washington D.C. in 1875.
It was within this orphanage that Fish's future was shaped.
Albert was a good childm even participating in the orphanage choir!
The staff would ridicule and beat the residents within the orphanage, going as far as to force children to beat each other, almost like a game.
Fish was documented as stating "I was there 'til i was nearly nine, and thats where I got started wrong. We were unmercifully whipped. I saw boys doing many things they should not have done."
There was a specific teacher that would force the children to get undressed and then constantly whip them.
This was when Fish started getting pleasure from enduring pain and inflicting it upon others.
Fish would frequently get erections during these beatings, which caused the other boys to inflict more pain on him out of confusion and anger.
Paracast.com states that "It is likely that seeing a religious authority figure perpetrate such sadistic, brutal acts led Fish to believe his own actions were sanctioned by god."
Fish's mother, Ellen, was able to achieve a job as a clerk in the Treasury Department and eventally was able to work within a Government Facility enabling her to take her children back.
Fish began inflicting his own pain with a nail studded paddle after leaving the orphanage.
He started writing letters to women in newspaper columns describing the pain and torment he wanted to inflict upon them.
He started a relationship with a local telegraph boy.
He was introduced to the ways of urolagnia and coprophagia (The process of eating feces and drinking urine) for sexual pleasure.
He begun to frequently visit public baths in order to watch young boys undress, Fish spent a great deal of his spare time within these baths.
In 1890 Fish moved to New York with his mother and later told the police that he worked as a prostitute for the first first while.
This is when he begun inflicting pain on others for pleasure and started raping young boys.
by 1898 he achieved a job as a house painter and met Anna Mary Hoffman. A woman 9 years older than him, while his mother planned for them to get married.
Fish later visited a Waxworks museum with a male lover and was infactuated by the model of a dissected penis.
Fish was arrested for Grand Larceny in 1903 and was incarserated within Sing Sing Prison.
At least 24 needles were found embeded inside Fish's pelvis when he was incarserated at Sing Sing Prison. Showing a start of his sadomasacist nature.
Albert Fish's Mugshot colourized for modern times.
In 1910 Fish met an intellectually disabled young man, whom he begun to take advantage of. They started a sadomasochist relationship together and would inflict pain sexually upon one another.
Fish ended up convincing Kedden into following him into an abandoned farm house. Fish locked Kedden inside and held him captive for over 2 weeks. Kedden was subject to mutilation, torture, and brutal pain inflicted from Fish. Fish even mutilated Kedden's penis by disecting it and removing half of it. After Fish was finished he planned to kill Kedden and leave him, although out of fear of being caught he instead cleaned the wound and left Kedden with a $10 Bill for his troubles, kissing him goodbye and never seeing him again.
Fish soon after married Anna Mary Hoffman, the woman his mother arranged him to marry. After 19 years of marriage Anna left Albert for John Straube, a man they frequently stayed with. When Anna left she took all of their possessions and sold them for money. Unfortunately, Fish was left with six children to care for and a whole lot of mental health issues to address. This event definitely escalated Fish's mental health. His children would re-tell stories about their father doing concerning acts (later his mental health was categorized as schizophrenia and religious mania):
Some events were told as follows:
- He wrapped himself within the living room carpet and proclaimed himself in the name of "John the Apostle"
He left his son's in a field during their football game to climb a hill, when he reached the peak he yelled "I am Christ"
-He would attempt to engage in sadomasochist games with his children. Asking them to flog him with a nail studded paddle and other foreign objects.
-He begun to eat and attempt serve his children raw meat, escalating slowly until he began cannibalizing his victims and serving them for dinner.
-Although Fish caused a lot of torment and abuse he never harmed his own children.
The final days of Albert Fish and some of his final mistakes that led up to his conviction.
Albert Fish was only convicted officially for killing Grace Budd, although he confessed to 9 (identified) killings and many more assaults. Fish confessed to killing over a hundred people although many haven't been identified or proven.

Albert Fish contacted Edward Budd taking on the alias 'Frank Howard'. Fish requested Edwards help on a 'family farm' for $15 a week. While Fish was preparing to make Edward his next victim young Grace Budd introduced herself. He became infatuated in this young girl and brought the family gifts and treats. Albert told the Budd family he was going to take her to a family birthday party with other children. They agreed and never saw Grace again. This case was unsolved for six years until Albert Fish decided to write Mrs. Budd with an anonymous letter, gruesomely detailing all of the thorough details of Grace Budds abuse, murder, and the cannibalism afterward. This letter provided the police with the means of his arrest. Finally ending the rein or terror Albert Fish brought upon New York in the 1800's.

Fish was convicted as soon as Mrs. Budd turned the written letter into the police. This letter included evidence that was easily tied to Albert Fish written within it.
Albert Fish begun his trial on March 11th, 1935. Fish pleaded insanity, and mentioned that it was the word of god that told him to kill these children.
After countless psychiatrists met with Fish and confirmed his obvious mental health illnesses the trial was dragged on for an excruciatingly long ten days.
At the end of this trial Fish was sentenced to death by electric chair at Sing Sing Prison in Ossining, New York.
It was later professed by the jury that they indeed believed he was criminally insane, although they also believed he deserved the electric chair for his crimes. So they chose to have him electrocuted rather than incarcerated in an asylum.
