The Virgin Post

January 2017

What's on your agenda?

This is where we will sum up everything that we talked about in a nice neat package and then I'll give you your assignment. You will sing songs of praize and excitement and eagerly rush forth to share with the world the truch of which you are now mster

So... what are

we doing today?

  • We'll be learning about the why the press is such an important part of American politics
  • We'll also be learning how to tell the difference between fact and fiction when it comes to the news, if there is any such thing....

So... what are

we doing today?

And why does that matter?

  • How much easier would your life be if EVERYONE had to tell you the truth!?

or...

  • How much harder would your life be if you couldn't lie...
  • Has anyone every tried to manipulate you, using the "truth"?

The legacy of News

The

Fourth Branch

-Why we need the Press

Where we will discuss what the purpose of the press is, how it has functioned in the past, and the impact it has had in general in politics. Have things become more biased or has the press always had an agenda they are trying to acheive,

Media & the Press are often considered the fourth branch of government because of the power they yeild in revealing the truth.

This is huge check on the power of government... Remember the people are in charge but if they don't know what's going on, they can't do anything about it.....

Unchecked

Power

Because of the first amendment this power is unchecked by government. Only the people can check the power of the press.

But too often we don't...

Politics

& the Press

  • Government has tried and failed several times to stop the press.

  • But the more modern tendency is to use the press to their political advantage.

Well that's your opinion... and it's wrong!

BIAS!?...

I don't agree with that

-a particular tendency, trend, inclination, feeling, or opinion, especially one that is preconceived or unreasoned...

Where we discuss what biss is and how it impacts everything we do including what we say and write. We compare bias with it's far more dangerours sibling propoganda. We also discuss ways to distinquish bias in media and still see the truth.

Can you give me an example?

EVERYONE HAS IT!!!

BUT!

If you're aware of yours, you can avoid it!

Reporting

vs. Opinion

There are different TYPES of articles in the news

Reporting

vs. Opinion

Reporting:

Informing the reader of varifiable events & the direct impacts of these events

Opinion:

A commentators thoughts and ideas about certain events, their possible causes and effects

Beware! Propaganda!

When direct reporting is filled with bias in order to manipulate the reader.

Beware! Propaganda!

YOUR TURN!!

But...

I want the truth!

But don't despair!

Despite the danger of bais there are ways to see through to the truth.

...if you know the tricks and are willing to do that work...

What's the Source?

Newspapers used to clearly proclaim which political party they supported...

Now, news tries avoid their bias rather than aknowledge it and let you think for yourself.

What's the Source?

Some are better than others or at least show both sides.

News Sources

What does the author want?

Authors are trained to write with a purpose: something they want their reader to do because of what they tell you.

What does the author want?

So ask yourself:

What do they want you to do?

And are they manipulating information to get you to do it?

Where are they

getting their info?

Is this a first hand account or are they getting their facts from someone else?

And what bais do those sources have?

Where are they

getting their info?

Fact Check:

Don't go it alone!

Never...

Ever...

EVER!!

Trust just ONE source!

Fact Check:

Don't go it alone!

Check other news sources telling the same story:

How do they compare?

The truth is usually somewhere in the middle.

Be careful

of your own bias...

Be sure you're not just being told what you want to be told.

The truth is often and should be uncomfortable.

The good, The bad, and the... that'll do

So what should you know now?

Where we will discuss the tell-tale signs of bias in the press and how to find it. We will then be able to create a formula for press to bias ratio and look at some common examples of it today.

Once we have established the formula for observing bias in our news we will examime actual news stories and see if we can see some of the common treads to bias and find the facts. And blah blah blah I'm just trying to fill space here.

  • The Press is an essential check on the power of the government.

  • News will always have a bias whether it's intended or not.

  • You can see the facts through this bias if you use mutiple reliable sources, check reports purpose and sources, and check your own bias.

A current event

assignment... with a twist.

Find a news article...

BUT!

I don't want to tell me what it says...

I want you to bias check it!

A current event

assignment... with a twist.

You'll need to answer:

  • What is the name of your article?
  • What news source did it come from and what ideaology do the lean towards?
  • Who was the author and what was he/she trying to get you to do?
  • What other sources back up the reporting?
  • What biases of your own were challenged, if any?
