What is the FDE Cycle ?

By Charles Blackith

So what is the FDE Cycle ?

The FDE Cycle is the instruction cycle that Fetches, Decodes and Executes tasks inside a computer.

What are the steps in the FDE Cycle ?

FETCH: The first step that the CPU carries out is to fetch data and instructions from main memory and then store it in its own.

DECODE: The next step is when the CPU makes sense of the instruction that it has just fetched.

EXECUTE: Finally the instruction is then carried out upon the data and is "executed." These are the 3 main stages.

What is the role of the MDR and MAR?

The Memory Data Register (MDR) is a register in a computers processor (CPU) it stores the data being transferred to and from the immediate access storage. The Memory Address Register (MAR) is the CPU register that either stores the memory address from which data will be sent and stored.

What is the role of the PC?

The program counter (PC) is a register in a computer processor that contains the address location of the instruction being executed.

What are the roles of the ALU and the Accumulator?

The arithmetic logic unit represents the fundamental building block of the central processing unit of a computer. Secondly, the accumulator is a register for short term intermediate storage. Its main job is adding sequences of numbers.

Example of the process

Data buses

Data Bus: A system within a computer or device consisting of a connector or set of wires that provide transportation of data.

Address Bus: An address bus is a computer bus used to transfer data between devices that are identified by the hardware address of the physical memory.
