Think about the different features that may be included e.g. title, caption etc
Media codes and conventions are like the building blocks of all the media around us. Media codes generally have an agreed meaning, or connotation, to their audience. There are three types of media codes, symbolic codes, technical codes and written codes.
Mise en Scene
You may come across this term in media. It means 'within the frame' and comes originally from theatre. We use it as a term to encompass all symbolic codes
Symbolic codes are social in nature. What this means is that these codes live outside the media product themselves, but would be understood in similar ways in the ‘real life’ of the audience. For instance, if you saw somebody receive a red rose, you would assume there is a romantic relationship between the two characters. If you gave somebody a red rose in real life, you might be hoping the same. Symbolic codes in media include setting, props/objects, costumes/skins, hair, lighting, performance and colour.
Technical codes refer to techniques, methods, processes and
standards associated with the creation of a design.
Therefore it can include genre conventions such as FPS, Rogue Lite, Health bars. It can also be features like low poly or hyper realistic.
Narrative codes are written or structural indicators that control how we experience a story. They can still be evident in still images. They include elements such as...
Conventions are expected ways in which codes are organised in a product.
In pairs or groups of three, analyse the codes and conventions of a provided example and be ready to feed back your finding to the class.
