She was the dance director of this company for more than 30 years since the establishment of the Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company in the late 1950's.
She was conferred The National Artist for Dance Award in 1988.

Reyes-Urtula received several important awards for her work. In 1963, for example, she received a Republic Cultural Heritage Award from President Ramon Magsaysay and won a Ramon Magsaysay Award with the Bayanihan Folk Arts Center in 1965. In 1988 she was appointed national artist of the Philippines in the dance category by President Corazon Aquino
