Who Was John Cabot?

John Cabot was an Italian explorer who sailed for the British. He discovered Canada while trying to find a shorter route to Asia.

Early Life

1450-1495

  • 1450 - Cabot was born in Genoa, Italy
  • 1461 - Cabot and his family moved to Venice, where he soon learned how to sail from local seamen and merchants
  • 1474 - Cabot got married
  • 1476 - Cabot became a Venetian citizen
  • 1476 - Cabot was believed to be a merchant in the spice trade
  • 1495 - Cabot moved to Bristol where he started convincing the king to let him explore with his motivation from other explorers like Christopher Columbus

  • John Cabot's wife was named Mattea.
  • They had 3 sons - Ludovico, Sancto, and Sebastiano
  • Sebastiano later took after his father and became an explorer

Cabot's First Voyage

  • Late 1495 - Cabot started convincing the British Crowd to investigate and claim land in the New World and that there was an easier route to Asia
  • 1496 - Cabot was authorized by King Henry VII, to then go out on a voyage and in return bring back goods for sale for the british market
  • 1497 - Cabot went off on a small ship called Matthew
  • June 24, 1497 - Cabot arrived on the coast of North America
  • 1497 - Cabot discovered Cape Discovery, Island of St. John, St. George's Cape, Trinity Islands and England's Cape
  • 1497 - Cabot claimed the land for King Henry, but he placed both English and Venetian flags.
  • 1497 - Cabot sailed back to Bristol, with good reports and happy folks

1499

Cabot's Second Voyage

  • Late 1497 - Cabot proposed the thought of a second expedition across the north Atlantic
  • February 1498 - King Henry Vll sent letters that patened Cabot's second voyage
  • May 1498 - Cabot sent off to Bristol with 200 men and 5 ships
  • July 1498 - One ship was damaged and sent to Ireland
  • By 1499 - Cabot claimed more land in Canada (East Coast) and found a shorter route to the northern Atlantic Ocean, which helped to establish the British Colonies
  • 1499 - Cabot and his crew were lost at sea

Cabot's Death

  • Cabot's was mostly controversial. The exact details are unknown.
  • Historians believed that John died in 1499 or 1500
  • His fate is a mystery as there were no remains found
  • The last known time the British saw him was went he was set off on their voyage to North America in 1498
  • Cabot and everyone on his two ships were never found
  • They were believed to be lost at sea
