Climate Change

by Gia Maisonet

Climate Change - changes in the average weather that occurs in an area over a period of years or decades

Key

Green - definition

Pink - effects

Purple - Solutions

Effects on Water/Ocean

-Acidification of the Ocean

-Rising Sea Levels / melting of glaciers and ice caps

-Slowing or shutting down of thermohaline circulation

Effects on Ocean

Ocean Acidification

-Ocean acidification occurs when more CO2 goes in to the water and bonds with it to create Carbonic acid which them separates into Hydrogen ions and bicarbonate which makes the waters more acidic

Ocean Acidification

Solutions

-Find ways to reduce the amount of CO2 in the air and the amount of CO2 that are being put into the air

  • Reduce the use of fossil fuels
  • Use solar energy
  • Use wind energy

-Grow more sea plants which absorb and use CO2 (not just growing large amounts of algae like in technofixes)

Side Effects

Side effects

-Can affect the businesses of fisheries and fishermen which can in turn affect the economy

-Detrimental to species who need calcium carbonate molecules to build there skeleton or shell

-prevents coral from recovering from coral bleaching, which occurs from an increase of temperature in the ocean

Rising Sea Levels and Melting of Glaciers and Ice Caps

Rising Sea Levels

-Rising global temperature is causing the melting of ice in the arctic, ice reflects heat in something called albedo back into the aptmosphere, however the less ice there is the less it can do this and the more that melts

-All the melting ice causes rising sea levels

  • Hurts people a lot due to
  • displacement
  • loss of fresh water

Side effects

-Property damage due to flooding

-Rising sea levels could cause entire cities to be underwater indefinitely

  • Loss of cities will cause displacement of many people who have to leave their homes

-Increases coastal erosion

-And it can add salt into the aquifer, which is bad because the aquifer is supposed to be freshwater

More Effects

Solutions

-Lower the amount of greenhouse gasses that are being emitted into the atmosphere

  • Switch from fossil fuels to cleaner energy like solar energy
  • Put a limit onto how many greenhouse gasses companies and countries can emit
  • Switch to full cost pricing

Slowing and Shutting down of Thermohaline Circulation

Thermohaline Circulation

Thermohaline circulation - it is the circulation of the ocean

-The circulation moderate climate, if it slows the Eastern area will cool significantly

-The ocean will not be able to move heat from place to place

-Ocean warming is causing this process to slow

-Can displace species that cannot survive in new weather conditions

Solutions

Overall the best solution is to lower the temperature of the ocean

-Use renewable and perpetual sources of energy instead of dirtier fossil fuels which produces more greenhouse gases can make that happen

Effects on Humans

-Floods and forest fires can displace humans and destroy their property

-Effects Human Health

  • more infectious diseases
  • more areas where insects can thrive
  • Contaminated water supplies
  • more pests
  • more heat related illnesses

Effects on Humans

Problem

Problem

The changes to land do not only affect the health of the environment, however it displaces humans as it makes many places impossible to live by desertification or flooding

Solution

Solution

-Building on higher land

-create escape plans

-do not build on flood planes

Weather and Plant Changes

Strategy

-Changes in weather patterns

-Plant Productivity

  • Increases CO = more photosynthesis

-Loss of biodiversity

  • Animals have to move

-Increased release of methane

Solution

Solutions

Same of the others, reduce the amount of Greenhouse Gasses being released and that are in the air

More Explanation

More Explanation

-Changes in Weather patterns

  • can make the area more hot or cold, more rainy or more dry
  • this leads to animals having to relocate which then causes a loss of biodiversity in these areas

-Plant Productivity

  • With more CO2 comes more plant productivity which will eventually hit a point and decrease.

-More methane into the atmosphere

  • When some ice melts it can release methane which melts more ice and releases more methane
  • Positive feedback loop
