BREATHE EASY WITH THE

+

CLIMATE CRISIS? NOT YET!

Grades: 4-6

Duration: 120 minutes

+

Teach photosynthesis before using this lesson. It will give students better context.

This Prezi presentation is based partially on a lesson from National Geographic’s “Save the Plankton, Breathe Freely.”

https://www.nationalgeographic.org/activity/save-the-plankton-breathe-freely/

Consult the lesson plan to guide you through the lesson with your students. Other resources in the lesson come from NASA and Science Focus. Adapt the lesson in ways you see fit!

LET'S BREATHE!

LET'S BREATHE

For one minute, calm our minds and bodies. Close your eyes.

Breathe in for 15 seconds.

Breathe out for 15 seconds.

AUTOMATIC

WE BREATHE ALL THE TIME WITHOUT EVEN THINKING ABOUT IT.

Why do we do this?

And what are we breathing in?

LOTS OF THINGS

The air you breathe is made up of lots of things

Oxygen only makes up about 21% of air. About 78% of the air you breathe is made up of another gas called nitrogen.

There are also tiny amounts of other gases like argon, carbon dioxide, and methane.

Plant and animal life on earth can’t survive without air. We need to breathe in oxygen. We need it to live. We breathe out carbon dioxide.

Let’s make sense of this graphic. What is it telling us?

A BENEFICIAL LOOP

We need plants for two things:

Food which we eat

Oxygen which we breathe in

LOOP

When we breathe in oxygen, it enters our blood. And then our blood releases carbon dioxide, which is in turn what plants need to live as part of photosynthesis. It’s a beneficial loop for both humans and plants.

WHAT PLANTS

But what type of plant does most of our planet's oxygen come from?

Take 30 seconds to think on this.

Close your eyes. Breathe in and out.

Now talk to a partner about what they think!

TYPE OF PLANTS

Share your ideas!

PHYTOPLANKTON & OTHER PLANTS

Most of the oxygen we breathe comes from plankton (50-80%) in the water and from trees and other plants on Earth. In all cases, oxygen comes from a process called photosynthesis.

PHYTOPLANKTON & OTHER PLANTS

Trees also make up a good portion of the oxygen produced on Earth (15-20%).

SO HOW MUCH DO WE BREATHE IN?

Let’s do the math!

HOW MUCH?

Get into groups of three.

Assign roles: timer, breather, and data recorder.

Measure and record the number of breaths taken in 30 seconds.

Use the Breath Calculations Sheet to independently figure out how many breaths you take in a day come from a type of phytoplankton called Prochlorococcus.

Use the Breathe Freely data sheet to guide your calculations!

LET'S LEARN ABOUT

PHYTOPLANKTON

LET'S LEARN

Watch this video

https://www.nationalgeographic.org/media/plankton-revealed/

As you watch, take notes on two facts and one question you have after watching the video.

WHAT

What facts did you learn?

What are your questions?

GIVEN OUR FACTS AND QUESTIONS

Let’s see if we can confirm or expand upon our facts and find answers to our questions. Use paired reading or reciprocal reading strategies with roles to further understand the role of plankton in the production of oxygen.

http://www.ascd.org/publications/books/118045/chapters/The-Fab-Four@-Reciprocal-Teaching-Strategies.aspx

Gather ten more facts from your readings and develop at least one question from each of the articles.

FORESTS & JUNGLES

FORESTS & JUNGLES

What do you notice? What do you think is happening in these photos? What is the story?

WARNING

While plankton creates most of the oxygen on Earth, forests, jungles, and all plant life produce oxygen, too. And they absorb a lot of the carbon dioxide in the air. BUT jungles and forests are being cut down. 80% of deforestation is happening in the red areas.

WARNING

http://wwf.panda.org/our_work/forests/deforestation_fronts2/

WHY?

Much of the world’s carbon dioxide is absorbed through these forests. But 8.8 million hectares of forests are destroyed every year.

WHY

Forests are being coverted for other land uses.

For instance, land is being cleared for plantations to grow pulp, palm, and soy, as well as for pastures for cows.

https://wwf.panda.org/our_work/forests/deforestation_causes2/forest_conversion/

Corporations are also logging all types of forests for hardwood.

Mining is also taking place, in which huge plots of land are dug up for metals.

LET'S SEE

How business have responded to the use of palm oil.

LET'S SEE

http://palmoilscorecard.panda.org/

YOUR "TO DO" TONIGHT

As homework, take a look in your food cabinet at home and review all the packaged items - cookies, chips, cereal, etc. Look at the ingredients to see if it contains palm oil.

Create a list of all the food that contains it. This is a major contributor to jungle deforestation. We will put the food on our Food Wall of Shame!

TO DO

LET’S GATHER MORE INFORMATION

Given our facts and questions, let’s see if we can confirm or expand upon our facts and find answers to our questions. Use paired reading

or reciprocal reading strategies with roles to further understand deforestation and its effect on carbon dioxide and oxygen levels.
