The author creates a mood through these details by showing how Auggie's hometown is one of the most diverse cities in the world and he is living in a time period where people have become more understanding of the different situations people are in. This would lead you to expect everyone to be more accepting of Auggie and his condition. Unfortunately, people were not as accepting of Auggie as expected.
August Pullman is a young boy who suffers a facial defect. After years of being home schooled, his parents decide to send him to school. After highs and lows at school, Auggie finally learns to accept himself and his own differences.
Jack Will is a boy at Auggie's school who is asked to be really welcoming and accepting of Auggie. Jack is opposed to the idea at first, but eventually becomes friends with Auggie. Later on, Jack ruins this friendship by talking bad about Auggie behind his back. Once Jack and Auggie fix their relationship, they become true best friends.
Olivia Pullman is Auggie's older sister. At times she tends to feel like the less important child. In the beginning of the book, she is starting at a new high school and has trouble fitting in and having a reputation other than being the older sister of a kid who faces the struggles of having a facial deformation. At points, she wishes her high school never knew about Auggie and later majorly regrets it.
Summer Dawson is one of Auggie's other really good friends at school. She was first friends with Auggie because she felt bad for him, but then she later realizes what a great personality he has and how much she really enjoys hanging out with him. Summer was judged for hanging out with August, but she never cared what others thought about her being friends with Auggie.
Miranda was Olivia Pullman's best friend until the beginning of high school. Even after Miranda and Olivia stopped being friends, Miranda always cared for and loved Auggie. When Auggie was younger, she was the one who gave him the astronaut helmet that he treasured for years.
On the day of Halloween, Auggie decided to wear a different halloween costume than expected. So, when Auggie walked into class that day, no one knew it was him. He noticed Jack Will had been talking to the group of popular kids. Auggie ends up overhearing their conversation and finds out Jack Will was only friends with him because he was forced. Auggie leaves the classroom very disappointed. Auggie has to figure out how to get over it if he wants to make it through fifth grade and he does.
On a school field trip to the movies, when Auggie and Jack are walking to the bathroom, they run into these 7th graders who begin to make fun of Auggie. When the three popular boys from fifth grade see this, they stood up for Auggie which caused the 7th graders to stop bullying him. The popular boys of fifth grade, Amos, Miles, and Henry, finally began to accept Auggie and they become friends. This finally changed everyones opinion on Auggie.
Auggie's graduation was one of three main events that took place in the book. In the beginning of the book, Auggie talks about how he wishes he could get a standing ovation. At his graduation this wish comes true. Auggie receives the Henry Ward Beecher Medal and gets a standing ovation. At this point Auggie had reached a point where almost everyone had accepted him and he had finished fifth grade.
The main conflict in this story is getting other people to accept Auggie for who he is. Auggie has trouble getting people to be his friend due to his facial deformation. A few people accepted him, but many judged him for his looks. Auggie has trouble facing society in the beginning, but got over the troubles that were thrown his way.
By the end of the story, the conflict was solved. Auggie began to accept himself and others also did the same. People started to realize what a great personality Auggie had and began to accept him for who he was on the inside. By the end of the story, almost everyone stopped looking for the bad in Auggie and learned to find the good. He accepted himself and so did society.
"Courage. Kindness. Friendship. Character. These are the qualities that define us as human beings, and propel us, on occasion, to greatness."
The tone of the author is demonstrated by the quote. The tone the author is trying to show is a hopeful tone. When the author says this quote, he is using positive words to provide a sense of hope for Auggie's future. The author is trying to show that one way or another Auggie's situation will have a positive outcome.
"And I feel ordinary. Inside. But I know ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. I know ordinary kids don't get stared at wherever they go."
This quote is significant because Auggie is showing how much he wishes he could just be ordinary and ends up convincing himself he is ordinary, when he is really extrordianary. When Auggie realizes he is different from most kids, it creates a melancholy mood. Auggie just wishes people could love him for who he is on the inside, rather than on the outside.
The theme of the book Wonder is kindness.
The theme of the book Wonder is kindness. The message this book is trying to give is that the smallest acts of kindness could make the biggest difference. It shows that choosing to show simple acts of kindness can impact someones life in a great way. This book also shows how badly you can hurt someone by not choosing kindness. When Auggie's classmates choose not to share kindness, the book shows how badly it made Auggie feel about himself. It also showed how when Auggie's classmates chose to show kindness, how much of a positive impact it had on Auggie.
This novel made me feel very sensitive for Auggie. The novel made me realize how people who aren't treated with kindness really feel on the inside. This book gave me a really soft spot for Auggie and his feelings. It shows you how much one mean comment or action can really hurt someone on the inside. This novel brought to my attention how important it is to show all people the kindness they deserve regardless of their differences.
While reading this book, I made connections to my life/world. Wonder gives you clarity and teaches us to love and respect all people, no matter our differences and we should work hard to make all people feel loved. After reading this book, I realized how much people should make it a priority to make people who look different from others feel comfortable. The book shows you how hurt one could feel when they are treated differently for not looking like the people around them. Everyone deserves to be treated correctly no matter what they look like.
The book Wonder gives many messages, but the largest message the book shows is to always choose kindness. The book makes you realize how important it is to show kindness to everyone, no matter what they look like. The smallest acts of kindness could make the biggest difference to the lives of others. Choosing to not share kindness, can hurt a person in unimaginable ways. The book is trying to show people how if everyone chooses to share kindness, we could change the world for the better.
