THE FOUR ANCIENT FILIPINO SOCIAL CLASSES
Maginoo
MAGINOO
- The maginoo class was the highest social class.
- They were generally referred to with the respectful title of Ginoo.
- A Datu or chief of a barangay is usually a maginoo.
- A datu with power over a larger area is called Gat or Lakan.
Maharlika
- Maharlika's are the warriors of the barangay
- They serve the datu in battle
- Members of the Tagalog warrior class known as maharlika had the same rights and responsibilities as the timawa
MAHARLIKA
The Timawa class were commoners
- who are free to own land
- who did not have to pay a regular tribute to a maginoo,
- but, from time to time, they would be obliged to work on a datu’s land and help in community projects and events.
- They were free to change their allegiance to another datu if they married into another community or if they decided to move.
