THE FOUR ANCIENT FILIPINO SOCIAL CLASSES

Maginoo

MAGINOO

  • The maginoo class was the highest social class.

  • They were generally referred to with the respectful title of Ginoo.

  • A Datu or chief of a barangay is usually a maginoo.

  • A datu with power over a larger area is called Gat or Lakan.

Maharlika

  • Maharlika's are the warriors of the barangay

  • They serve the datu in battle

  • Members of the Tagalog warrior class known as maharlika had the same rights and responsibilities as the timawa

MAHARLIKA

Timawas

The Timawa class were commoners

  • who are free to own land
  • who did not have to pay a regular tribute to a maginoo,
  • but, from time to time, they would be obliged to work on a datu’s land and help in community projects and events.
  • They were free to change their allegiance to another datu if they married into another community or if they decided to move.

TIMAWA

Alipin

Their are 2 kinds of alipins

  • Alping Namamahay
  • Aliping Saguiguilid
