Teej is a festival celebrated by women all over Nepal. This festival usually takes place in August and it lasts for three days. It's dedicated to Parvati and Lord Shiva because of their union in the history. The purpose of this festival is to get a good husband, and to pray for his longevity and prosperity. The three ceremonies of this festival are known as Dar Khane Din, The Fasting Day and Rishi Panchami.
Dar Khane Din is the first day of Teej. On this day, all the women gather by dressing up in their prettiest attire (mostly red) and then they start dancing and singing. Same day but at night, a long heavy feast called "Dar" is served to the women. Dar is usually hosted by men because women work hard throughout the year so they take a day off during this ceremony. Women often sing, dance and eat to enjoy on this day which only goes on till midnight because after that the 24-hour fast starts.
The fasting day is the second but the main day of teej. On this day, women fast and some keep it very strict by not eating or even drinking water whereas some eat fruits and drink water. And again they gather to dance for an entire day. Then they go to Lord Shiva's mandir to worship lord Shiva to prosperous the health of their husband.
A fun fact: Shiva mandir only opens for women and no men are not allowed to enter it for the day.
All women but especially those whose menstrual period recently started goes to the tap and takes a bath with red mud and brushes their teeth with Datiwan (branches of bushes). It is believed that after taking the bath and performing all the rituals women are considered pure and forgiven from all their sins. After worshiping lord Ganesh, they enjoy and end the festival by eating, singing and dancing.
