Why is the
ocean important
to humans?
Humans depend on the oceans for many big and/or small reasons. From providing jobs to providing the air we breath. Did you know the ocean produces about half of the earths oxygen? We are also dependent on the ocean for food! Some examples of seafood are; shrimp, mussels, lobster, etc.
The term runoff refers to something that drains or flows off. Nitrogen runoff is when too much nitrogen flows into bodies of water. This form of runoff can lead to algal blooms. An algal bloom is when algae grows out of control, or "blooms". This can lead to plants that need sunlight to photosynthesis, not getting direct sun, therefore not being able to grow and flourish
Nitrogen runnoff leads too algal blooms, which leads to organisms food decreasing, which can lead to whole populations having to choose between leaving or dieing. When this happens it is called a dead zone. The largest dead zone is located in the Arabian sea, it is recorded at 63,700 square miles. The second largest dead zone is about 4,155 square miles in the Gulf of Mexico.
Overfishing is just as it sounds, fishing too much or catching too many fish at once. This can cause the biodiversity in that area to decrease. When too many fish are removed from an area, it creates an inbalance in the food web.
62% of The Mediterranean sea's fish stock is now over-fished . This area is the most overfished in the world.
Artificial reefs are particular man-made items that are meant to improve marine life. These artificial reefs are mean to mimic some characteristics of a natural reef. Artificial reefs create new habitats for marine life. They can also increase biodiversity.
People benefit from artificial reefs because they can get rid of material that would have been dumped in a landfill. They provide a location for fisherman to fish.
Artificial reefs also, surprisingly, help with re-creation, these reefs improve hydrodynamics for surfers.
The purpose of oil and gas drilling is to create a well that is used to bring oil to the surface. Unfortunately, offshore drillings are responsible for many spills of oil and other poisonous liquids. Spills harm much of aquatic life. Oil & gas drilling pollutes the air that we breath. Oil spill cleanup workers are in a lot of danger if they come in contact with the oil.
