Reading

Reading

Read "The Man Who Couldn't Stand up" from The Divide by Matt Taibbi.

We will discuss this text tomorrow, so highlight the text with that discussion in mind, i.e. mark passages that stand out to you, or that you want to comment on.

Claims and Evidence

Look for evidence first. A statistic or example that is cited as proof of their claim. Then find the claim.

If you cannot find evidence to back up claims made, note the lack and then describe what evidence would be needed to justify the claim.

In your explanation section, explain how the evidence you suggested would support the claim.

Improv

Improv

Situation 1:

Two men are talking. One, whom we will call "the lover", has a girlfriend. The other, whom we will call "the friend", tries to plant seeds of doubt in the lover about the girlfriend's loyalty.

Improv, part deux

Situation 2:

Two men are talking. This time the friend tries to convince the lover that his girlfriend has eyes for a particular man.

Improv III

Situation 3:

A confrontation between the lover and his girlfriend. Believing her unfaithful, he is angry but won't say why. She is innocent and bewildered by his anger.

Creative Writing

Take the improvisations we did in class, and weave a story around them.

2+ pages in your composition book.

However, there are 3 complications:

1. The lover is black and the girlfriend is white.

2. There is a significant difference in social background between the two.

3. You decide what ethnic origin the friend is.
