After World War II, the U.S. and Soviet Union were the two strongest nations. They both had different views about econimics and government, so they had a war of words. The U.S. is a capitalism country and the Soviet Union was a communist country
Although this is called the Cold War, there wasnt actual fighting involved, only threats and words. There were some specific events that happened in the war that easily could've started a weapon war.
Summary: The Space Race was a race between the U.S. and the USSR to see who had the best technology in space. Both countries made it to space sucessfully.
The soviets were first to successfully put a satellite in orbit. The Soviets also were first to put a man into space on April 12, 1961. Almost a year later America launched John Glenn on Febuary 20, 1962. By now, Americans were behind.
On July 16, 1969 America launched the Apollo 11 which was the first space craft that landed on the moon. The crew included Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. The trip to the moon took 3 days. This is where the famous phrase Neil Armstrong said "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," comes from.
The Space Race ended in July of 1975, both sides had plenty failures that caused deaths of several astronauts. The U.S. would've most likely had the first satellite in orbit if they were aloud to us military rockets instead of research rockets.
The U.S. was the first to devolop nuclear weapons. Once the Soviet Union tested its first nuclear weapon the world was shocked because they didn't expect that they were this far ahead. This started the Arms Race. Both sides spent billions of dollars making these weapons. In 1961 it was estimated there was enough nuclear weapons to destroy the world.
On August 13, 1961, the communist government of East Germany began building the "Antifascistischer Schutzwall." (Berlin Wall) To this day, the wall serves as one of the most powerful symbols of the cold war.

In April of 1961, the CIA launched a full scale invasion of Cuba with 1,400 American Cubans who left their homes once Castro took over. The invasion ended badly, the invaders were outnumbered by Castro's troops, America surrendered after less than a day.
