TEACHER NOTES

TEACHER NOTES

This Prezi presentation was developed and adapted from free lessons from BetterLesson and resources from PBS Learning Media, National Geographic, and NASA. Use the lesson from BetterLesson to anchor your instruction.

The lesson investigates how various types of ice melt differently, and then explores how the ocean temperatures are rising and to what effect. Make a copy of this presentation and adapt it as you see fit to guide your class.

Standards: NGSS MS-ESS3-2, MS-ESS3-5

BIG QUESTION

Prime your mind:

What raises the sea level more?

  • Ice sheets on land, like glaciers on the polar ice caps

  • Massive sheets of sea ice

  • Equal amounts of both raise the sea levels equally

Discuss!

BIG QUESTION I

HEY SCIENTISTS:

DESIGN AN EXPERIMENT

HEY SCIENTISTS

Given this set of equipment and materials, how do we figure out whether sea ice or land ice contributes more to rising sea levels?

Materials

  • 1-liter beakers

  • 150-mL (milliliter) beakers

  • Crushed ice

  • Plastic wrap

  • Goldfish

  • Sand
  • Water

  • Rubber bands

  • Straws

  • Corks

  • Graduated cylinder or beaker for measuring out 300 mL of water

  • Ruler

In groups of four and using the equipment and resources, design our experiment.

Write your steps on chart paper or on the whiteboard, and be prepared to share your design with the class. Also include thoughts about how you will record the information, perhaps (hint) in a table.

(We added a couple “distractors” to fool you, so not all equipment and materials will be used.)

Let's Compare & Do

LET'S COMPARE

Get two 1L beakers and label

one “Sea” and the other “Land.”

Get two 150 mL beakers and

fill each to the top with sand.

And 4 ice cubes to the “Land” beaker, but put them on top of the sand beaker, not in the water.

Add more water to the “Land” beaker so it is equal to the level of the “Sea beaker".

Cover the sand beakers with plastic wrap and fasten it around the beaker with rubber bands.

Put the sand beakers

inside the 1L beakers.

Measure and record the water level in the “Land” beaker.

Pour 300 mL of water in

each of the 1L beakers.

Record the water levels every 10 minutes, until the ice in both beakers is melted.

Carefully place the beakers in a sunny window or under a lamp.

Add 4 ice cubes to the

water of the “Sea” beaker.

Measure and record the water

level of the “Sea” beakers.

Estimate the percentage of ice left during each recording.

Let's Dialogue

With your data sheet filled out, answer these questions alone and then with your group.

LET'S DIALOGUE

What happened?

Which melted faster?

Land or Sea? Why?

Which made the level rise more?

Land or Sea ice? Why?

How is this experiment related to rising sea levels associated with climate change?

Deep Dive

BIG QUESTION II

Below are readings on what happens when our polar ice sheets and mountain glaciers melt.

Read them solo or in pairs, and as you read them, create a list of what happens as a result of the rapid melting of the Earth’s ice.

Demo of Rising Seas

RISING SEAS

Given what you’ve learned about melting ice and rising sea levels, take a look at how far sea levels will rise in various coastal regions.

Explore: Look up regions/cities that will affect you, your friends, and relatives who live both near and far. What will happen as a result of this increase in sea level?

Anything new to add to our list?

ILLUSTRATION

Given that water covers most of the Earth, let’s consider how global temperature increases are affecting the oceans.

Watch this video from NASA to learn about thermal expansion.

PUTTING IT TOGETHER

We have covered a lot of territory. And now we need to put it all together by mapping out a cause and effects of melting ice.

Use the list we created as a class (based on our readings and the demos) to inform the relationships between the various causes and effects of sea levels rising.

PUTTING IT TOGETHER

Draw a graphic of the causes and effects of global melting ice.

List around the left side of the graphic the causes of increases to melting ice. For the causes, draw arrows from each to melting ice at the top.

EXERCISE

List around the right side of the graphic the effects of increases to sea levels. For the effects, draw arrows from rising sea levels to each of the effects.

Now take a look at your effects.

Do any of the effects in turn affect any of the causes? Draw arrows from the effects to the causes that seem to be reinforced by the effect.

Give it a try. Let’s share what we determined!

ASSIGNMENT

ASSIGNMENT!

Given your investigations into the affects of polar ice melt, let's dig into its effects on living beings, including humans. Pair up and create a PREZI PRESENTATION or VIDEO that looks at the affects of melting ice. Here are some helpful links to learn how.
