Introduction
- In this presentation we will discuss the different characters that are impactful towards the character Ender in the novel Ender's Game. We will discuss who and what each character has done to contribute towards the central theme of the novel
Central Theme
Theme
- Numerous themes are explored throughout the entire book Ender's Game. Childhood and growing up is a major theme that appears throughout the novel. All of the characters that we will discuss have helped Ender develop as a person.
Valentine Wiggin
- Ender's older sister is the only person in the world who truly loves him. She protects him from Peter, their sadistic older brother. We see at points throghout the novel that she is the only family member that truly cares for Ender. Although she realizes that Ender is still a kid, she, with the influence of Graff, convinces Ender to return to battle school to fight in a invasion. Without her influence in Ender's entire life, Ender wouldn't have any motivation to continue to attend at battle school. At the end of the book, Valentine convinces Ender to go with her to colonize the bugger worlds, and she works on a history of the world on the way there. Later she travels with Ender as he searches for a new world for the buggers. She finally gets to grow up with Ender.
Peter Wiggin
Peter
- Ender's brother Peter is a intresting character. He is a complictated character who is very inteligent. His precense and memories have haunted Ender for his entire life. He phyically, mentally, and emotionally scared Ender for his entire life. Ender cannot act out without being reminded of Peter and his actions. Peter sticks with Ender forever.
Colonels
Graff & Anderson
- When we first get introduced to these two characters we get to see their initial thoughts and reactions on Ender. We see their character development throughout the novel and how they evolve.
- Regarding the Battle School and the bugger invasions, Major Anderson holds the same opinions as Colonel Graff. He does, however, frequently take issue with Graff's harsh tactics and ruthless manipulation of Ender. But in the end, Anderson unwillingly comes to see that Graff's actions are justified because Ender defeated the Buggers.
- Colonel Graff is viewed by Ender as a father figure. He is there to help and train him to become a great soldier, but he pushes him too far, which eventually results in Ender's downfall. Graff forces him to mature and acquire self-reliance.
Mazer Rackham
- Mazer Rackham is a character we were aware of throughout the novel. He is a prominate character towards the end chapters of the book. He becomes Ender's final teacher in the higher rank battle school. He teaches Ender that he must forget all distractions (family and fellow soilders) and focus on winning the simulations. He pushes Enders to his limit and without telling him the truth, Ender does not trust him at all.
Mazer Rackham
Bean
- Ender's last friend at Battle School, Bean, is very reminiscent of Ender when he first arrived. Bold and brilliant, Bean helps Ender with Dragon Army and also helps him hold on to his humanity. He is one of Ender's commanders against the buggers.
Alai
A member of Ender's launch group, Alai becomes Ender's best friend and helps him gain acceptance with the other recruits. Several times his friendship is enough to keep Ender from falling into despair. Later on he is one of Ender's commanders in the battles against the buggers.
Buggers/Queen
Buggers/Queen
- The character of Buggers plays a significant role in Ender's Game's storyline. The purpose of the plot, location, and characters is to raise kids to be soldiers who are capable of killing intruders when they attack. The paranoia is what drives the plot, which centers on Ender, who was able to survive thanks to the adult's protection. We read about invasions throughout the book, but we don't actually experience one until the conclusion of the plot. We get to understand how important these creatures were to Ender and his trip when he learns what is behind the mirror in his video games. They taught him how to be a better soilder and how to have compassion.
Ender's Own Impact
Ender's Own Impact
- His greatest virtue is compassion, which draws others to him. His ruthlessness earns people's unwavering confidence in him as a leader. Ender might be viewed as a victim, a bright kid forced to participate in a game he never wanted to, but that interpretation is oversimplified.
To Sum Up,
Conclusion
- There are many different characters that have a impact on Ender Wiggin. They all contribute towards the central theme we focused on in this presentation.
