BECAUSE The Planet is not what it seems like. What do you think that means?
and even more here!
Planet Earth is many things at the same time:
- Located in the Universe, in a solar system
- Possessing Atmospheric Layers
- Divided into layers beneath the surface
- Home to all human life
- Home to all non-human life
How is Geography divided into branches ?
Primarily two ways -
1. Systematiclly or Systematic Approach
2. Regionally or Regional Approach
SYSTEMATIC geography studies one issue and looks at its spatial variations in all parts of the globe.
What does that mean though?
SO, for example, a geographer studying climate would study climate all over the globe.
- They would identify and delineate major climate types, their place of occurence and features.
-They would study the pattern of distribution of temperatures and of rainfall.
- But does this mean they don't study regions? What do you think?
Regional Approach
Regional geography studies the world's regions. It studies the specific unique characteristics of places related to their culture, economy, topography, climate, politics and environmental factors such as their different species of flora and fauna.
Basically, it studies a region's geography in its entirety.
But what do you think a region is?
The Middle East is considered a political, environmental, and religious region that includes parts of Africa, Asia, and Europe. The region is in a hot, dry climate. Although the styles of government are varied (theocracy in Iran, monarchy in Saudi Arabia), almost all of them have strong ties to religion. The region is where three of the world's major religions were founded: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.
A region is an area of land that has common features. A region can be defined by natural or artificial features. Language, government, or religion can define a region, as can forests, wildlife, or climate.
The Middle East, South Asia, the Amazon Region are all regions which cover two or more countries.

THE SYSTEMATIC APPROACH DIVIDES GEOGRAPHY INTO :
HISTORICAL
SOCIAL/CULTURAL
PLANT GEOGRAPHY
studies the
historical processes through which the
space gets organised or the study of geographic change in a place or region over a period of time.
study of society and its
spatial dynamics as well as the cultural
elements contributed by the society
GEOMORPHOLOGY
CLIMATOLOGY
POLITICAL
ZOO GEOGRAPHY
study
of landforms, their evolution and related
processes.
POPULATION/SETTLEMENTS
study of
structure of atmosphere and elements
of weather and climates and climatic
types and regions
studies boundaries, space relations between neighbouring political units, delimitation of constituencies, election
scenario and develops theoretical
framework to understand the political behaviour of the population.
studies population growth, distribution, density, sex ratio, migration and occupational structure etc.
Settlement geography studies the characteristics of rural and urban settlements
HYDROLOGY
ECOLOGY
PEDOLOGY/SOIL GEOGRAPHY
ECONOMIC
studies the realm of water
over the surface of the earth including
oceans, lakes, rivers and other water
bodies and its effect on different life
forms including human life
studies economic activities of the people including
agriculture, industry, tourism, trade, and transport, infrastructure and services, etc
study the
processes of soil formation, soil types,
their fertility status, distribution and
use.

Now, think about which approach you think makes more sense to you and why?
So, we see that a systematic approach does not mean regions are not studied. Regions are often used as a microcosm to understand the planet on the whole.
We will majorly be adopting the systematic approach, especially to study physical geography. We will also adopt the regional approach, especially in the context of INDIA and mostly as examples or evidence.
