Observation of a behavior that has not already been determined by something
To measure a
specific behavior
The behavior that is, or going to be, observed needs to be specifically defined.
The behavior is observed with specific procedures and is in no way subjective.
When conducting the observation, the time and location is very specifia and determined for a reason.
After the observation, the scoring is specific and the same across differnt scorers. There is no varying outcomes across scorers.
Recording of behaviors in the natural setting that the behaviors occur. Recording the data when they happen in the setting by trained personnel.
Both are used to take notes on the behavior in the natural setting as it happens. These ways are used a lot because they are easy and do not require a lot of trianing. But, you have to be careful when using the data to make decisions becuase it leaves room for people to over inturpert that data that was recorded.
A - Antecedent = what happens right before the behavior
B - Behavior = what behavior was displayed
C - Consequence = what happened right after the behavior
This is a data collection technique that is used to collect data as to what happens the moment before a behavior happens. What behavior is being displayed and then what the consquence or reward was of that certain behavior.
It is a great way to start trying to find or develop a hypothesis for the behavior that is being displayed. Taking data like this also takes out the input from anyone recording it but looking at the data and things that are actually happening.
Once you have defined the behavior that is going to be observed, you have to choose a recording method to use during your observation.
The recorder counts the number of times the beahvior that has already been defined happens in a preset amount of time. This then will be converted to a frequency by the number of times the behavior was shown in the amount of time.
Duration recording is when the observer records how long the behavior that has been defined is happening for. This is used for students in school with tanrums, aggressive outbursti, and other behaviors. These behaviors are better tracked to know how long they last.
This is when the observer times how long it takes from when an objective is given until the behavior starts. This is used to see how long it takes for the behavior to start showing itself. The behavior has already been defined and the observer is recording the time until it starts after the directive was given.
The observer would select a certain time period to conduct the observation. The time period would be divided into equal number of intervals. Then the observer would record if the defined behavior is shown in each of the intervals.
This is when the defined behavior is being measured in intervals. These intervals are normally 15 seconds long in time. If the behavior is shown for the whole 15 seconds then you would put a mark indicating that the behavior was seen the whole time. If the box is empty then there was no behavior for that interval.
The observer is recording the defined behavior in intervals. If at any time the behavior is shown during the interval then it is recorded. If it is shown more than once during the interval it is only recorded once.
The defined behavior is only recorded if it is displayed at the moment that the interval begins.
BOSS - Behavior Observation of Students in School
ADHDSOC - The Attention Defict Hyperactivity Disorder School Observation Code
An observation code for observing students with behaviors in the classroom environment. It uses 15 second intervals in a total of 15 minutes of observation. It also breaks things into three gorups; off-task motor, off-task verbal, and off-task passive. It also give time frames for teachers about how long they should lecture before the move on, they cannot lecture forever because more students will not be able to attend.
This is used as a screening tool and an evaluation tool. It is used with students that have or are suspected to have ADHD and other related disabilities. It can be used in classrooms, lunch room, etc. There are seven categories; interference, motor movement, noncompliance, verbal aggression, symbolic aggression, object aggression, and off-task. These are categories that are implemented or can be seen in the classroom setting. This is another tool to have as an educator to help reach all students better and see whats going on in your classroom.
