Dysfunctional Society

A dystopia is a fictional society that is deeply flawed in which everything has degraded and yet correlates to aspects of real life.

"Another spear, a bent one that would not fly straight, went past his face and one fell from on high where Roger was. The twins lay hidden behind the tribe and the anonymous devils' faces swarmed across the neck." (181)

Once the boys on the island stop thinking individually and become part of a greater society that cruelly and has strayed from it original values, island society has become dystopian

The Farm Upside-Down

"He carried a whip in his trottert. There was a deadly silence. Amazed, teriified, huddling together, the animals wat ched the long line of pigs marfch slowly round the yard. It was as though the world had turned upside-down." (132)

Animal Farm

Animals society is dysfunctional in that in its attempt to get rid of totalitarianism it has reverted into cruelty by those in power
Phrase "upside-down" illustrates exactly the picture that a dystopia tries to paint.

Moments in the Books

Animals Alone to Organize Themselves

"A little way down the pasture there was a knoll that commanded a view of most of the farm. The animals rushed to the top of it and gazed round them in the clear morning light. Yes, it was theirs--everything that they could see was theirs!" (28)

Orwell writes scene as transition into new society
"Everything they could see was theirs" points out:
Animals now have ownership of farm
Control
No outside forces interfering with the animals' organization
Animals are now alone to shape their own society

Parallel Scene in Lord of the Flies

"They had know by some instinct that sea lay on every side. But there seemed something more fitting in leaving the last word till they stood on top, and could see a circular horizon of water. Ralph turned to the others. 'This belongs to us.'" (28)

Golding also transitions into a new environment by competely leaving the characters to organize themselves
In both books this is what allows characters to develop a new and dystopian society

Did not agree with and disobeyed/ altered rules set up by previous leaders "There was nothing there now except a single commandment. It ran all animals are equal But some animals are more equal than others" Similar to how Jack did not listen to the rules, and the conch

Military Forces (Dogs and Hunters)

Follow there leaders closely. "They kept close to Napoleon. It was noticed that they wagged their tails to him in the same way as the other dogs has been used to do to Mr. Jones" (53)
Together before becoming military force, for the hunters they were in the choir together for the dogs "They were the puppies whom Napoleon had taken away from their mothers and reared privately." (53).
Used violence that was encouraged by there leaders, to keep "order" such as in LOTF when Jack has a manhunt for Ralph

The Power of injustice throughout the books

Injustice

In both books the major theme of them would be the injustice that follows after the change of power
In both books they lose humanity when power changed hands because of Jack and Napoleon's poor insight and decision making.
"In addition, Napoleon ordered the almost empty bins in the store-shed to be filled nearly to the brim with sand, which was then covered up with what remained of the grain and meal."(75).

Similarities and Differences

Both Authors had a similar life story, they both went to college in the UK and were born in the early 1900's.

Both rely upon allegory to give a harsh social commentary on particular aspects of society building projects.

Both are set in an isolated situation

Both stories discuss a society attempting to organize and rule itself

Contrasting themes

Animal Farm voices political opinions and Lord of the Flies focuses more on human nature but less on its complication on world politics

Animal Farm represents when people corrupt a system and Lord of the Flies it shows a society falling apart because of human nature

Animal Farm speaks more in metaphor and Lord of the flies directly addresses its topic of focus

The relation of Communism in Animal Farm

Communism in Animal Farm

Writer George Orwell wrote animal farm on the pretext of giving a simple comparison to the rise of Communism in Russia. This political allegory was proven to be true throughout the book during their communistic reign. "Only get rid of man, and the produce of our labor would be our own. Almost overnight we could become rich and free."(9).

Joseph Stalin: Dictator of Russia, like Napoleon took out last leader and created fear throughout his country. Was responsible for over 20 million deaths with reasons like treason and wrongdoing. Portrayed as pig.
