Whakawhanaungatanga

Whakawhanaungatanga

At the centre of my practice is whakawhanaungatanga, or building relationships. I believe that one of the best things I can do as a teacher to help my students succeed is to build strong, professional, culturally responsive relationships with my students and their whānau. Whakawhanaungatanga is also one of my strengths. I pride myself on my ability to build relationships with students from all walks of life, cultures, religions, and from all around the world.

Tino rangatiratanga

An important part of my practice is my belief in student's tino rangatiratanga. This is important in two ways.

Firstly, each student is the master of their own learning, I can only guide them as best I can. It is this belief that drives me to incorporate inquiry and project-based learning into my classroom. I wrote my master's dissertation on how these can be used to improve self efficacy and achievement in mathematics.

Secondly, this links back to Te Tiriti. It signifies my obligation to treasure the knowledge of te ao that my Māori students bring with them to my classroom. I am committed to learning more about te reo and te ao Māori so that I can better support them.
