Fetal Pig Dessection

By Alex Ngo,Tam Nguyen, Christina Nguyen

Objective:Dissect a fetal pig to further understand the various body systems and organs to compare to the human anatomy

Materials

Materials

  • Fetal pig
  • Rubber bands
  • Scalpel
  • Dissection pan
  • Dissection pad
  • Dissecting scissors
  • Gloves
  • Goggles
  • Apron
  • String
  • Tweezers
  • Bone cutting forceps
  • Scale
  • Pipette

Pre-Lab

  • Wear appropriate attire
  • Wear gloves, safety glasses and apron
  • Wait for teacher’s approval before proceeding with the procedure
  • **caution of sharp objects**

Prep

  • Clean dissection pan before using
  • Place absorbent pad on dissection pan
  • Wash the fetal pig to prepare for dissection
  • Clean tools before proceeding

Procedure

External

Procedure

External Anatomy:

1. Examine the fetal pig and determine the sex

  • Males: genital is near the umbilical cord

Females: genital is near the anus

2. Weigh the pig and record the weight

Data:

  • Male
  • Weight: 5 lbs

3. Measure the length with the string

  • Using the string compare the measurement to a ruler in centimeters
  • Record the data
  • Using the measurement will help determine/estimate the age of the pig

Data:

  • Length 42 cm: 115+ days in age

Procedure

Internal Anatomy:

1. Tie the two rubber bands together and place them under the dissection try.

2. Grab the loops of the rubber bands and wrap them around the pig's forelegs and hindlegs spreading them apart to reveal the pig's ventral side

3. When using the scalpel, start the procedure by making the v-shaped incision (a surgical cut) at the pig's throt.

4. Continue incisions down the pig's midline stopping before the umbilical cord. When at the umbilical cord, make a u-shaped incison around.

5. Use dissecting scissors to make two incision on each side of the ribcage to see the organs in the thoratic cavity

6. Cut through the trachea and esophagus

7. Carefully lift the organ block while cutting through the connectivve tissue to completely remove the organ block

8. Turn over the pig on its dorsal side

a. Cut the skin from the forehead to the ears and make an arc cut from ear to ear

b. Use the bone cutting forceps to cut though the skull (be careful not to cut through the brain)

c. Carefully remove the brain with the spinal coard atttached

d. Make a long and narrow cut through the brain in order to see the left and right cerebral hemispheres of the brain

Organs Overview

Organ Block:

Thoracic Cavity: contains the heart and lungs which are protected by the ribcage

Abdominal Cavity: contains the liver, stomach, spleen, intestines, and kidenys

To remove the organ block first make an incision through the trachea. Lift the organ block from the trachea and cut along the spine. This will remove all the connnective tissue. When you reach the end of the organ block the whole section should come off cleanly.

Conclusion & Discussion

conclusion

Human and Pig Anatomy:

Humans and pigs share the same organs which are also located in the same area. This includes the heart and lungs located in the thoracic cavity protected by the ribcage and the stomach, spleen, intestines, kidneys, and liver.
