Elizabethan Era Physician

Note the physician wears a long robe, black boots with a beak like mask. This likely helped saved the physicians life.

Physicians, Illnesses, and medicines,Oh my!

Illnesses of the Era

Bubnic Plague-carried by fleas, infects the lymph nodes and causes a bubo or open pus filled sore

Dysentry-infection of the intestines causing loose stools with blood or mucus

Typhoid-a life threatening infection caused by contaminated food and water

Medicines was something that the Physician gave you, or you could pick this up at an Apothecary

Types of treatments

Buboes-butter,onion,garlic and others like tobacco,arsenic, lilly root & toad

Headaches-sweet smelling herbs

Stomach Pains-Worm wood, mint, and balm

Lungs- Licorice & Comfrey

Vinegar was used for cleaning

how did the sickness spread

The sickness spreaded by people not washing there hands or in the bigger cities they pooped in the streets. It also spread because of the lack of intelligence back then and most of them didn't really know what it was or how to cure it.

  • Sicknesses were blamed on bad air, stars or just God being angry!
