The hero overcomes Death

Who Helps the Hero

Santiago doesn’t receive any help from anyone except God. This is shown throughout the book because even though Santiago isn’t religious he prays and God helps him catch the fish. "Now that I have him coming so beautifully, God help me endure. I’ll say a hundred Our Fathers and a hundred Hail Marys. But I cannot say them now" (Hemingway 87).

Santiago eventually gets back to his town in Havana after about a week of dedication, hard fought battles, and almost death. People really showed how much they cared for him because everyone in the fishing community was worried that he died at sea. According to the text “Did they search for me?’ ‘Of course. With coast guard and planes” (Hemingway 124). He also changed the way people looked at him because he brought back the largest fish that they have ever seen.

Trials and Enimies

After Santiago catches the fish a lot of sharks start attacking the dead fish because it is like free food. Santiago is tested by seeing if he can stay strong and fight off the sharks eating and mutilating the fish he just caught. Santiago was able to kill all the sharks on the way back to his home, but he was left with almost no meat from the fish he caught. According to the text “He took about 40 pounds” (Hemingway 103).

When Santiago was fishing and trying to catch the huge fish he wanted to stop because of how hard the fish was fighting and how big the fish was. Santiago was getting very tired of fighting the fish so he wanted to cut the line, but he pushed through and eventually caught the fish.

The Status Quote

Santiago is a very poor and old fisherman who doesn’t have many friends, and he has very bad luck, "He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf stream” (Hemingway 9). The only person he has to keep him company is the young boy who cares about him a lot.

The hero faces Death

Santiago almost dies while he is fighting the massive fish because of how tired and exhausted he was. Santiago had little to no food while he was fishing which made it very hard for him to regain the energy he was missing. According to the text “ I could not fail myself and die on a fish like this” (Hemingway 87).
